QUESTION 7: Using relevant published theories, comment on Branson’s leadership style?

So What is leadership?

Leadership is the lifting of peoples’ vision to a higher sight, the rising of their performance to a higher standard, the building of their personality beyond its normal limitations. Leadership is the power of one individual to influence/ guide the actions of another.

There are three main types of leadership styles:
• Autocratic leadership
• Democratic leadership
• Laissez-Faire Leadership

Richard Branson, who is “recognised by 95% of UK’s consumers”, is well known for his leadership skills, he has never been afraid to take risks and believes that people are the foundation to his company’s success. He believes in his customers as “Virgin people” (virgin.com). Richard Branson’s style of Leadership is a democratic one. He is a democratic leader can be described as someone:
1) who allows employees to take part in decision-making,
2) he is a leader is that is fully supportive and developmental,
3) he is a leader that retains responsibility and is accountable for results.

This type of leadership could be looked upon as in transformational:
 transformational leadership leaders inspire followers to transcend their own self-interests for the good of the organisation using charisma, presenting a vision, being a hero (referent power). In comparison to
 In transactional leadership leaders guide or motivate their followers (legitimate /reward power).

Richard truly feels that getting other peoples input and listening to what people have to say are a core value to him. He has said before, “Virgin Group is an organisation driven on informality and information, one that is bottom heavy rather then strangled by top level management”, (me and my virgin book) showing that he listens to people below the management level and cooperates and intakes ideas at all levels.

Branson will still ultimately make the top decisions.

In my opinion, leadership is more than just someone who can enlist the aid of others to accomplish a specific task. It is a characteristic and a lifestyle of a person. True leadership is not displayed on days we feel like it. It is a constant display of ones actions to accomplish tasks and set an example for others to emulate. A leader is someone who can be turned to in the absence of knowledge or direction and will either have the answer or know where to get the answer.…

The Ottoman Empire started in the thirteenth century in 1299. Lasting for more than 600 years, it is considered one of the most long-lasting empires ever in history. Before the Empire was officially established, the Turks were originally nomads, migrating about from place to place following a traditional route seeking for food and shelter. The Empire was then established, and the Ottoman Empire was named after Otman (Osman Ghazi). They hired men known as "mercenaries" to battle the Mongols which was led by Khan. Osman's empire expanded quickly and significantly throughout the world, because of the ghazis. The term ghazi means a brave warrior. These people are willing to give their full strength expanding the great empire. This has led to the empire conquer southeast Europe, western Asia, and north Africa, however the expansion came to a halt for a while. It is considered that in Islam, it is wrong to conquer Islamic lands and fight Muslims, so the Ottomans have decided to migrate to Christain lands. One of these Christian lands, also one of the greatest empires in history was the Byzantine. The Ottomans succesfully conquered it, and this was the start of a great Ottoman Empire.…
