Donald Trump's Immigration Policy
In discussions of immigration during the last presidential campaign, one controversial issue has been the fact that it was addressed as a national security problem. It was claimed that immigrants from Middle East pose a terrorist threat to the United States.
Donald Trump (2016) advocates the policy that aims to restrict legal immigration from the countries in the Middle East. According to Trump, Islam is an integral feature of the culture in those countries and it contradicts the values of American citizens and also threatens their safety with its’ violent nature. He states that key objective of his policy is to protect Americans from radical Islamic terrorism. In his speech Trump emphasizes that immigration policies of Obama’s administration required modification, as they did not take into consideration the danger that refugees can bring to the United States. Jeff McCausland (2016) questions

Trump bases his new national security policies. The reason why I do not agree with Mr. Trump is that his claim that people from Middle East may cause a considerable damage to the citizens of America rests upon false assumption about violent nature of Islam. Moreover, by focusing on this scarcely relevant argument, he overlooks other ways to effectively pursue safety in the country. For instance, as it is pointed out by McCausland, most attacks were carried out by born and naturalized American citizens, therefore, the real threat lies in the minds of individuals regardless their religious identity. McCausal is surely right about the lack of cause and effect between immigration and terrorism and doubtful interpretations of this connection that Donald Trump offers. Unfortunately, even though Trump’s statements appear to be questionable after they are carefully evaluated, he makes an impact on people with populistic rhetoric and much of what he says is taken for granted by his audience and misleads

The current immigration policy is seriously treated as a national security issue due to the rise of illegal immigration, drugs smuggling, and terrorism in recent years (Andreas, 2009). Preventing another 9/11 has been at the top of the agenda in all recent presidential administrations, which has made the immigration policy to fall around this issue by creating new anti-terrorism programs and initiatives that restricts the admission of person into the United States (Andreas, 2009). Before 9/11 immigration in the United States was a “Low Politics” issue meaning that it was not a top priority for presidents, government and state officials (Andreas, 2009). During that time the United States and Mexican border was just a mangle chain like fence with no border patrol officers and anybody could leave and enter the U.S. as they pleased without going through any border searches (Andreas, 2009). After 9/11 the issue of immigration went from “Low Politics” to “High Politics” to the extent that many presidential campaigns have run promising that immigration will be one…

Across time and varying ethnic groups, the same basic tenants have justified socioeconomic stratification, white fear-mongering and supremacy, and violence against bodies of color, reified every few generations to continually conceal and perpetuate the capital interests of the state: adherence to traditional, cisheteropatriarchal family values; personal responsibility as performed through economic self-sufficiency; the subtle positioning of one disenfranchised group against another, to the end of whitewashing and subjugating both. The nature of these systems can be most thoroughly parsed through an examination of two texts in conjunction. Eithne Luibhéid surveys in Entry Denied: A History of U.S. Immigration Control the neoliberal immigration…

Muslim immigration to America has been occurring for decades, and is not a new thing. However, throughout history the U.S. government has had trouble creating a sensible Muslim immigration policy. Currently, president Trump—a man with bold and controversial policies--has enforced a temporary ban on Muslims until the American government can create a valid immigration policy. American people are in turmoil while deciding whether or not they should allow the U.S. government to put restrictions on Muslim Immigration. Some Americans are concerned that Muslim immigration will jeopardize America's security, while others feel it is America's duty to be compassionate and welcome immigrants.…

Subsequently, this social unrest has led to increased protests, rise in hate-related crimes and formation of the Black Lives Matter movement. It is quite transparent the current divide taking place in the US, and Trump vilifying Muslims only exacerbates these wounds. The presidency brings along the power to influence many citizens around the globe, as citizens and countries look to the US president to help guide the future of their nation. Trump instigating stern immigration policies and anti-Islamic rhetoric further gives people ammunition to alienate Muslims, many of whom are fellow Americans. According to the FBI, there has been a 67% surge in Muslim hate crimes since Trump’s campaign. Trump’s inauguration speech was saturated with nationalistic overtone, but he needs to understand that immigration and diversity is what the US was built upon, and that it is imperative to feeding creativity and galvanizing a diverse set of…

    Vetting System

Many people opposed Trump’s travel ban stating that none of the countries on the list proposed a threat to our national security. In many ways they are right. Trump claims that the countries on the list were responsible for 9/11. The original order also stated that green card holders and people with valid visas to work in the United States could not travel between our country and theirs until a more effective and efficient vetting system was put in place. In many ways, Trump is right. Our vetting system does take an extraordinarily long time and many immigrants find themselves waiting decades before their citizenship is granted. A more efficient system would prompt a quicker and easier entry to our country. However, constitutionally, you are not allowed to discriminate against any human regardless of religion, race or ethnicity. We can corroborate with the court cases like Korematsu’s that the detention or removal of a group of people from an entire country should never be allowed and that regardless of the war we are fighting. Citizens from those countries, unless under federal watch, should not have their rights infringed upon them due to scapegoating. Many great people from around the world come to work in the United States due to it’s endless opportunity and also many times because of the rights granted to each individual. A personal example is with my father. As a director at Google, he spends his time with people of every race, religion, sex for the majority of his day. Trump’s travel ban would prevent many people like the men and women my father works with from continuing to support their families, and would also prevent them from trying to build a life for themselves. In times of war, in many ways the President should take executive action to ensure the safety of our…

On January 7, 2017, Trump signed an executive order banning immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, all majority-Muslim countries. Not only did the order ban immigrants from those countries, it also worked against people who had green cards and were overseas visiting in those countries. Many were stuck at airports after the order was signed, unable to get back to the country where the families, jobs, and schools were located because of a misguided view of their religion and stereotypes that follow Islam. Trump claimed that the law was not about banning Muslims and was about keeping America safe, even though he called for a Muslim ban throughout his entire campaign. If that were true than the law would have survived in court, but it was struck down in multiple federal courts and deemed unconstitutional due to its discrimination of…

Instead, the history behind the topic shows why the anti-immigrant and anti-Latino rhetoric was triggered when someone, such as the President of the United States, began to make such remarks about immigration and about Latinos. The United States is a very wealthy country with many benefits and opportunities. Since day one, people have been fighting for this country and have been giving their lives to protect and serve the country and its people. The patriotism that American citizens have is very understandable. Some of these people might believe that Latino immigration might ruin what they have worked so hard to build. Just as President Trump once said “When Mexico sends its people ... they’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” This is the mentality of many Americans today, and that is something that they do not want in their home country, which is understandable. On the other side, the reason people migrate is because they are leaving something that was atrocious. Many people who migrate to the United States are escaping their country's violence and poverty to give their children a better chance at life. If we can understand each other’s battles and concerns, we can work together to come up with a solution that benefits both…

Trump should not only blame Mexico for all crime activities resulting from illegal immigration such as drug traffickers, gangs, and cartels. Many of the crimes that America has seen has not only be committed by illegal immigrants. There has been similar cases of rapes, shootings, robberies, and killings in the news involving both black and white Americans as well. Even if Mr. Trump kick all them out, this will not solve all the problems. Some of these illegal immigrants pay taxes and work hard to provide for their family. In fact, the undocumented immigrants leave their own country, Mexico, in search of better life, job opportunities, and safety. The American dream is the driving force of melting pot and HB2. I think Mr. Trump is being a little bit unfair with undocumented immigrants because many of the American citizens are born of undocumented immigrants. By enforcing mass deportation, Mr. Trump is going to divide families. His attitude against undocumented could eventually result in more hatred against him and the country itself. By cancelling visas, the relationships between the United States and Mexico can be jeopardized. The Mexican government may decide to cut economic ties with the United…

Recently here in America, many citizens are still in loathe of us immigrants, especially the president, Trump. He dislikes the fact that different backgrounds are flourishing in this country and will stop at nothing until we're all gone. He criticizes all of us together with one’s mistake and label us, “rapists and criminals” even though he has no idea why most of us choose to come because some are here as refugees escaping from violent places to seek safety, while the majority of us like you and I, mom, are hoping to pursue the American Dream by working hard day and night until it becomes a reality.…

They say the worstsufferers of terrorism are Muslims and they are given the most sacrifices against this. This can cause effects to those from those 7 countries. For example, foreign studentsmay be discouraged to enroll in American schools. In addition, travel restrictions cancause other countries impact on how to operate. For example, Trumps ban can causeother countries to place travel ban on US workers. The Iraqi government is inconsideration to place ban on US workers.According to CNN, people are arguing whether it’s a ban or not. Trumps states that,“call it what you want, it’s about keeping bad people out of our country.” Also whitehouse secretary, Sean Spicer states, "A ban would mean people can't get in, and we'veclearly seen hundreds of thousands of people come into our country from othercountries." However, they both referred to it as a ban. Many people are staying this isirrelevant.Even though many people are criticizing and protesting, many people do support thedecision, mainly trump supporters. Owen Daniels, a researcher for Middle East Peace and a writer for the Huffington Post shared a very eye opening statistic, “The US has resettled nearly 800,000 refugees since September 11, 2001, and only three have been arrested for activities related to terrorism” (Daniels). Saying that you are scared for Syrian refugees to come in the country because some could be a terrorist is not a good argument because if 800,000 have been let into the country since 2001 and only three have been arrested. The number of people who are not terrorists compared to the number that are not is of no comparison, if we join forces with our allies, we will be able to keep the few bad refugees at bay. Refugees should not be denied access to the United States out of fear because while so few are looking to create ruckus, all most all of them are simply looking for places to start a new life. As a society we are ignorant to think that a race is responsible for terrorist acts, what makes it worse is that one of the main political parties that leads our country believes the same thing. Eric Bradner and Ted Barrett of CNN wrote, “Republicans, however, are stressing the security concerns posed by the potential influx of people from the war-torn country” ("Republicans to President Barack Obama: Keep Syrian Refugees out"). Republicans claim that refugees are a threat to our society because they result in terrorism, that they can't take that “risk”. Well by not letting the refugees in you are denying millions of women and children who have just lost everything, they are trying to start over their lives and we as a ally should be honored to let them resettle here after what they have been through. The people coming from these war torn countries are not trying to start a war. They have just survived their own…
