Essay on social issues – Disability Discrimination

In 2012, Equal Opportunities Commission had handled amount 16,600 cases and 56% involved in disability discrimination. This result was really surprise to everyone in Hong Kong. Disability is a physical problem that makes someone unable to use a part of their body properly and discrimination means the practice of treating one particular group in society in an unfair way. So, disability discrimination is a discrimination action against people based on the physical ability of their body especially against people with disabilities in favor of people who are not disabled. “Everyone is born equally. Everyone must be equality.” Therefore, we should change our society. We should build a wonderful and peaceful Hong Kong.
About the causes on disability discrimination. First of all, majority of long-term disability is mostly causes by illnesses like cancer, heart attack or diabetes; back pain, injuries, and arthritis are also significant causes. Moreover, musculoskeletal disorders are the cause of disabilities, for examples the arthritis, back pain, spine or joint disorders… etc. People always discriminate to disabled people because the disabled people seems to be difference with normal people. Also, the disabled people maybe need some tools for helping them to live normal, such as wheels, crutches. So, people always tease at their actions.
For the effects on disability discrimination. It can divided into two sub parts: individual and society. In the part of individual, it can further divided into disabled people and normal people.
For the disabled people, because of the teasing from society and other people, they will feel frustrated and depressed. If this situation continuous, their self esteem and self image will decrease quickly. They will think that they are so useless and they are the burdens of this society. More seriously, they become traumatized, self destruction and finally choosing the road of death. Thus,

The disabilities discrimination act was made for individuals who suffer from a disability this right was made so even they can have the same rights as everyone else. They don’t want any individual with a disability to feel as if though they are not missing out on anything just because they are not able to do such things. The act speaks up for people who are not confident enough to get across all their rights they are entitled to. The Act also still applies. Previously, it made it unlawful to discriminate against people in respect of their disabilities in relation to employment, the provision of goods and services, education and transport. The individuals this act helps are disabled individuals who suffer from illnesses like; down syndrome, dyslexia and mental health problems. It also refers back to individuals who may be involved in an accident and now suffering from a broken leg, arm etc, who are then on wheelchairs this makes them unable to do things others can do. The act also helps individuals from not getting treated any different just because they may not be able to do things others can without disability this act is here to stop discrimination like this. Sometimes there may be no reasonable adjustment, and the outcome is that a disabled person is treated less favorably. For example, if a person was not able to understand the implications of entering into a mortgage or loan agreement, and they did not have anyone authorized to act for them, it would not make sense to require a bank or building society to enter into that agreement.
