TASK

It is also important to consider proximity, orientation and posture as you could be giving out the wrong signals without realising. Other things to consider are facial expressions, tone and pitch of voice and vocabulary used. It is important to be observant at all times so you can react to how the person you are talking to reacts. An example of this is when talking to a parent about issues with a child or issues at home, I would take them into another room to give them some privacy and a quiet environment. You might stand a bit closer and at an angle to show you are interested in what they have to say. But also be observant at the same time to make sure they are comfortable with this.

It is important to never assume things have universal meaning, eye contact, physical gestures and touch can all be seen in different ways depending on culture, family background. For example the ok sign has a completely different meaning to someone Greek. They may think you are implying they are homosexual.
At a toddler group I used to run an Asian lady joined who did not speak much English, this made me concentrate on what she said more, making more eye contact. I eventually realised this made her feel even more uncomfortable as Asians often are not comfortable with direct eye

They could also be helped with sign language or pictures, like Makaton and PECS. An interpreter could be used if needed and written documents could be translated if. In our setting we have a couple of children who need support with speech. We use lots of pictures to help them communicate and some signs.

Confidentiality is about respecting other people’s right to privacy, keeping personal information to myself or using it only for professional purposes or in the best interest of a child. This leads to trust. Attaining the trust of the parents and the children is very important to enable you to give the best possible care to the children.
One of the children I have worked with was adopted and there were issues with his biological parents, who were local. It was therefore vital to keep information confidential in relation to this. If I had discussed information about this child with other people, he could have been in danger.
