What is a computer?
Computer is technically defined as an electronic device use to process data, converting this data into information that is useful to people (Norton, 2000). It is the dumbest creation of man. What you see is what you get. They do not lie (Cain).
The invention of this device did changes in the human life. In a relatively short time of its existence, the computer has spawned an industry that continues to grow rapidly.
Today most of the students largely depend on this electronic device to complete their assignments at school. Instead of having a visit to their school libraries, they would prefer to browse the internet.
Computer dependency of students is one of the leading issues in our society today
But the question is, can computers replace textbooks? Does computer existence means that textbooks are already useless?
Several studies had been conducted to come up with the answer to the different questions about the issue of computer dependency of students to computers and internet replacing the role of the school libraries in giving the students the information that they need through textbooks, periodicals and other reading materials. Some of the study concluded the significance of the mentioned device which contributes to the improvement of the overall performance of every student. However other study came up with a different conclusion and findings.
This research is conducted to find out the positive and negative effects of brought by computer dependency to the students. It will contribute awareness based on the different ideas that will be given from the different sources not only to the students but also to the parents and teachers.
Computer dependency particularly here in the Philippines seems to be a never ending issue. It is still a matter of debate. Do computers really help out boost the student’s performance at school or does it bring distraction only?

The internet is a great and expansive place, and that is why sometimes students rather explore it then listen to their teachers. All these sites and apps are taking up the attention of students throughout the world. This is shown in a Canadian study which proves that computers are helping lower the users grade and his or hers classmates as well. The experiment showed that students who were using computers during the lecture had lower grades than those who were using pen and paper. The worst part is that students around the computer user were also affected and they too had lower grades. A professor at NYU said that “screens generate distraction in a manner akin to second-hand smoke.” He teaches Media Studies and was an advocate for the use of technology during class. The tipping point for him was when he realized that the distractions spread. He no longer allows the use of technological devices unless the assignment requires it. He also stated that when technology was removed from the…

First of all, Internet reading, in particular, could be such a source of distractions for the student that they may cancel out most other potential benefits of a Web-linked, e-learning environment. In addition, even though lightweight e-books benefit students’ backs, the astounding costs to outfit every student with an e-reader and pay for regular software updates promise to make the e-textbook a very pricey option. From the author’s perspective, we shouldn’t jump at a new technology simply because it has advantages, only time and study will reveal its disadvantages and show the value of what we’ve left behind.…
