In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. My first priority is to keep the environment safe to reduce injures. I will take my responsibility very seriously and make sure that there is no child injures at the center. I will make sure that there is no infant left unattended on a changing table. Young infants are only allowed to sleep in their cribs. Not in the car safety seat, bouncy seat, or any other equipment that is not safety approved. Cribs in our facility will be free of blankets, toys and other soft materials that could cause suffocation. All of our facility toys will be large enough to prevent infants from trying to eat or swallow objects that could cause choking. On a daily basis, all toys and equipment will be inspected to make sure they are safe and in working order. Broken toys, chipped wall paint, loose nuts and bolts or splinters from wooden furniture will not be acceptable at any time. All electrical cords and wires in my facility will be tied and out of sight to prevent children from tripping and falling. The first competency emphasized a good cooperation with other health care professions. The difficulty in developing this competency may due to the patient specific conditions that may give a health care provider more “tough time” if proper communication were not made before interacting with the patient. For example, during my first clinical rotation, My CI needed to treat her last patient of the day, however, the patient was in a bad mood and reluctant to participate to therapy. My CI asked me to bring the patient to the therapy gym. It took me a great effort to explain the benefit of exercise and finally he said he will come after napping for two hours. I went back to my CI and told her the patient decision. My CI said that she needed to leave in one hour because she has children in day care that needed to be picked up. So she went to the patient room and brought the patient to the gym for exercise. The patient was very unhappy to complete his therapy session, which might cause him giving a hard time to the nurse and CNAs, who would come to see him later of the day.
