Competency Statement I - To Establish and Maintain a Safe, Healthy Learning Environment

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. To establish and maintain a healthy environment is to prevent the spread of germs and promote healthy eating habits. Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. I wash my hands and wear gloves before and after handling food, helping with toileting, changing diapers and cleaning noses. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. Cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily and mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area and sanitized at the end of the day.

My room allows for the children to be engaged and feel secure, and facilitates predictable, consistent and intimate care for each child. My room design guides and encourages children to learn through play while shaping their beliefs about themselves and life.…

I plan on making sure my students wash their hands after using the restroom and sneezing or coughing into their hands. I also plan on complying with my daycares exclusion policy and excluding any sick children from class to keep them from spreading germs to other students. I plan on…

Part of my work is to ensure that the children in my care are allowed to develop these skills in a safe environment. At Westview I carry out day-to-day risk assessments for activities and excursions that each child participates in. These risk assessments look at both the spreading of infection amongst children and potential accidents, enabling children to develop more robust immune systems. As part of this I also ensure the children wash their hands after going to the toilet and eating as well as covering their mouths when sneezing and coughing.…

When ensure that this is done by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks on a regular basis and if any health and safety issues arise with the equipment or environment we will attend to these issues and recorded the information and remove any fault from the area and ensure that other members of staff are aware of these issues. Plug socket covers, safety gates and door stoppers are monitored and maintained by checking that plug socket covers are in all sockets and check that none are broken, if any plug socket covers are found broken they should be removed and replaced with new. When children arrive at the setting safety gates must be in place before children attended so that no children can leave the setting. Door stoppers must be put in place to ensure that children don’t trap their fingers in the door when going out and all members of staff must put these in place and if any fall of the door members of staff should replace them immediately. Personal protective equipment must be available at all times and all staff should use this when changing nappies, cleaning up sick and if a child is bleeding. When wearing personal protective equipment we stop the spread of germs and cross contamination to anyone else. If any member of staff notices that personal protective equipment is getting low on stock that member of staff should inform the manager so more personal protective equipment can be ordered. DBS checks should be carried out before anyone is to start working in the setting because safeguarding is a major issue when working with children and is the duty of the setting manager to ensure that all members of staff hold a…

soap and water. In this class I observed that the teacher did not use soap in washing the hands of children after lunch. Additionally, there was a need of consistency in wiping and washing child’s hands and teacher’s hands after diapering. Furthermore, hand-washing for children upon arrival should be practiced everyday. During my observation, one toddler was able to go outdoor unnoticed by any one of the teachers, so for safety practices teachers should always see to it the all doors are locked to keep the children safe all the time.…
