I don’t know how to begin to define myself in order for you to understand who I truly am. I believe there is more to a person than stories that mould us into who we are today; like when one asks, “Tell me your story," I don’t think about that time when my family broke into two or that time I was diagnosed with my mental illnesses. I think of coffee, because coffee is bitter and bitter people drink coffee, sad people; people with heavy hearts and heavy footsteps, with tangled thoughts, people with anxiety and words left unspoken, people like me. Lonely people drink coffee. I think of the world map I have in my room with thumbtacks marking every country I want to visit. I think of foreign languages, and how beautiful it sounds when words form…

The way I see myself definitely varies from one degree to another. For instance, I am not at all tactful as I am imaginative. This is another reason why I perceive myself as being slightly quiet. I chose these answers because I know that I like to think a lot to myself and am more observant of others around me than I am of myself. Since I am rather quiet, I haven’t really practiced my communication skills as much as I’d like and thus why I am not very tactful. On a more positive note, I do see myself as extremely imaginative and friendly. I chose to rank myself high on these two because I always try to treat others the way I would want to be treated and was always told that I was extremely curious, imaginative, and artistic as a child. I believe I still am.…
I did mention myself changing. A lot of things promoted that growth. Many outside forces that I did not mention in my previous writings influenced me to grow and made me into who I am today. The main catalyst for my personal growth was going on that trip and gaining perspective. Getting out of my small town, I realized that my problems were so miniscule and that there was a whole world out there. From there I spent more time with family, rekindled my love for art, and transferred to a different school. The hard time I went through was awful, but it promoted so much growth and has made me into the person I am…
Ta-Nehisi Coates’ novel Between the World and Me is written as if the narrator is telling a story by writing a letter to his son, Samori. It is written similarly to Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time as both novels are written in letter format. The narrator is talking about the fears and differences living in the world as a black person and describes more specifically the fear of harm to the body. Throughout the novel Coates is telling his son about the truth behind their history and his experiences with poetry, love, religion and a few different journeys he went on. Coates begins by telling how he felt as if he always had to be “on guard” as a young adult and that he felt threatened and was quite often fearful of the world around him but as the…
New York City is known as “The Big Apple” for its large buildings, tourism, and entertainment. On the other hand, the city of Florence in Kentucky is known for the horse track racing at the Turfway Park located 10 miles from the Ohio River. Even though both cities are located in different part of the coast, they are good places to tour or live in. New York and Florence have more in differences than similarities based on their activities, transportation, and cultural diversity.…
A speech, or formal address delivered to an audience, has many purposes. It can be used to inform people and increase awareness on topics or to teach and demonstrate things. Speeches can also persuade people to make a change and can be entertaining. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and Sojourner Truth’s”Ain’t I a Woman” speech both appeal to their audience through the art of persuasion through the use of various compositional features. Both M.L.K’s “I Have A Dream” speech and Truth’s ”Ain’t I a Woman” speech capture and motivate their respective audiences for change but both authors are similar and also differ in their compositional techniques to reach their audiences. Sojourner Truth’s sarcastic yet bluntly honest speech makes quick and active use of repetition, ethos, and personal anecdotes to reach her listeners. King’s speech, on the other hand, passionately and eloquently implements the use of repetition, logos, and personal and historical references.…

When trying to decide which college to attend one of the most important things to figure out is if you want to attend a small college campus or a large college campus. Are you the type of person that looks foward to going to college to meet lots of new people or being up in the stands with thousands of other people cheering on your school basketball or football team? Or are you the type of person who likes getting to know all your classmates and professors and getting more one on one time with the professors to ask each and every question you have? These are some of the things you need to think about when choosing whether or not you want to go to a small or large campus.…

When most high school seniors graduate, they plan on immediately attending college to better their lives. The goal is to get a successful job that will pay enough to provide for the needs, and most of the wants of life. Unfortunately, the great cost of attendance at most universities leaves many students scratching their heads about how they will pay for the better future they desire. Some dig into their life savings, some receive scholarships, and most apply for student loans. But are student loans truly a good idea? Will the load of debt most acquire from student loans help deliver the grand future most students dream of, or will it actually hinder their chances of getting a job, and therefore make college, and their decision to be up to their ears in debt, a huge mistake? The article, End U.S. Student Loans, Don 't Make Them Cheaper, by Richard Vedder says that student loans will do more harm than good, while Jordan Weissmann 's article, More Student Debt, Please: Why College Students Don 't Borrow Enough, takes a positive approach to student loans. While both pieces offer reasoned points, only one can have more validity, but which one?…
We often do not realize we compare ourselves to those around us weather it is at work, school, or at the grocery store. Let’s say you go grocery shopping at Food 4 Less, and there is a person in front of you and the cashier tells him the amount due and asks him if he would like to donate to the Children’s Memorial Hospital, the man says no thank you and leaves. You are next in line, and now it is your turn to pay and the cashier also asks you if you would like to donate to the Children’s Memorial Hospital and you smile and say yes five dollars. How did that make you feel when the guy in front of you did not donate money, but you did? You felt awesome. But, while you are still bagging your food you overheard, the cashier asking the women behind you if she would like to donate money to the Children’s Memorial Hospital and the person says yes I would like to donate 20 dollars. What would your reaction be if you only donated 5 dollars and the women behind you donated 20 dollars? In my response paper, I will be explaining what the social comparison theory is.…

When words are not an option to describe someone what else might one use to represent themselves? In some ways each individual has little qualities that define them as a person and distinguishes them from other people. But also images can play an important part of telling a lot about someone because there is always a story behind an image. Many images come to mind when thinking of things that represent who I am. The imagery I would include in my metaphoric portrait would be a stage, Disney World, and a plane.…
