The Role of Good Listening Skills in Cross-Cultural Communication

Communication is the key to understanding. Without communication confusion forms and chaos will soon follow. Not only is communication important but good listening skills are needed as well in order to process the communication that’s being delivered. Cross-Cultural Communication is even more challenging because along with the need for communication and good listening skills there is the need for interpretation because different words may mean different things to different cultures. The different cultural levels are identified as national, regional, gender, generation, social class and corporate (Barrett, 2009). The barriers of these cultural levels can only be broken down if the proper communication and listening skills are utilized. One of the key components of communication and good listening skills is understanding what the actual cross-cultural barriers are and then focusing the communication to address those needs. One major barrier is the different languages that are spoken and these languages are not just limited simply to countries it even exists within men and women who communicate so different that it’s a mystery that there is ever a connection between the two genders (Barrett, 2009). Cross-Cultural communication is important because we live in a diverse world on so many different levels and if success is the answer communication has to be the formula.

    There are many ways in communicating between one another being verbal and non verbal. Many people communicate more non verbally if there foreign to the language or just in a normal fast pace day.     Helping Annie video is a video about a young lady with depression and an eating disorder. She has confronted her school nurse about the problem and is seeking help. She is a senior in High School with no history of depression. In her junior year at High School, her grades started to fall. The nurse decided to bring in a psychiatrist and social worker. With this group, the nurse will hopefully be giving a plan on how to help Annie. When the group decided to sit together, the diversity within the group was different. Annie’s nurse had, social worker and psychiatrist each wanted to help Annie in their own way, but neither wanted to listen to the ideas that the others had. At the beginning diversity caused barriers in communication of the group. Each person wanted to be heard for their idea and was not allowing others to give insight in their ideas. From the transcript, it looked as if another person was cutting off each person. A few times in the transcripts, words were being cut off giving the idea that another person was jumping in the conversation. Maybe if the group used a sense of competence and a sense of progress they could have agreed on an accomplishment at the beginning of the session. Having a sense of progress for the group meeting may have been the key for starting out the meeting. If everyone understood from the beginning that they were brought in with Annie as their goal, then maybe the barrier of communication would have not risen. Each person in the group was competent in their own mind and profession; this is why they were brought into the meeting. Maybe being too proud could have caused some of the opinions. The members of the group should have come to the meeting with open eyes and left their ego-ness at the door before entering into the meeting.…

    While all of the complexities of human communication can not be captured in a single model, this diagram will offer a reasonable begining. A sender source has a message in mind. The source intends to “encode” the message into language that will be understood by the receiver. Perhaps it is a statement of the sender’s preference for a particular outcome in a negotiation. The message may be encoded into verbal language or it may be encoded into nonverbal expression. Once encoded, the message is then transmitted –sent via voice or facial expression, or written statement, and through face-to-face interaction, video, letter, telegram, etc.- to the receiver.The receivers receptors pick up the transmission, and “recode” the message to give it meaning to the receiver. In a one way of communication cycle this would constitute a completed transmission. A source who puts his message in writing and sends it by mail to the receiver generally assumes that the message is received and understood. However, most communication –particularly in negotiation- involves continued dialogue and discussion between at least two parties.
