Christmas in Purgatory
I learned a great deal from watching the Willowbrook video and discussing the Christmas in Purgatory book. One of the most interesting things I discovered was how recent the events we saw and talked about actually happened. I had not realized that the kinds of inhumane images we saw had only happened less than 50 years ago. It was hard for me to believe that other people, who were not in the same position as those who had to give up their children and loved ones and send them away, could just turn their heads and look the other way. After seeing the video and receiving a glimpse into the lives of the people and families that had to live through the traumatic events that took place I completely agreed with the Christmas in Purgatory book that “there is a hell on earth.”
One of the main things I realized from the video and class discussion was that helping better the education and accommodations for students with disabilities is a job for every educator. The video helped me relate the information to my own life by making me realize one major flaw that I failed to see in myself was thinking that because I am not a special education major it is not as important for me to help take the necessary steps to better the educational need of those with disabilities. After watching the Willowbrook video I realized that much of the problem with what happened may have begun with people who looked the other way because they thought it was of no concern of theirs. The images and video really helped me grasp the realness of what happened. It was truly something I had to see to believe. I think it related to the course information by really opening students eyes and making us want to learn more and do more to make things better for those with disabilities. The information I learned has made me realize that my view on what role I should play in helping students with disabilities was incredibly off. This fact really made me like the video because it helped give me a better

The effect that was made in the students facing these problems in their schools was very terrifying, some of them were in a point of being embarrassed of their heritage. They were embarrassed of being Mexican Americans, and this was something that had to be changed. The rise up of the Chicano students to demand their district officials for equal education rights in their school, was a movement that made the Chicano voice strong not only at East LA but all over the country. This is one point everyone should be able to understand, the video gives us the struggles Mexican Americans were facing at the time, and how they became together to overcome this issue is an example of unity something that we need to do now a days to become stronger and make our voices heard as a…

As indicated by my perspective; this video is uncovering the positive parts of Dyslexia; it uncovers that actuality that most children with dyslexia are not certain about their scholarly capacities. This can prompt a poor self-idea and a feeling of cynicism about school and what's to come. This does not need to be the situation. Numerous children with dyslexia really have high IQs, however they have not had the opportunity to take advantage of their intrinsic qualities. From my point of view, the huge issue is that schools educate everything by telling. A teacher tells kids, 'here's the way the world works, here's the manner by which you tackle this kind of issue now go and…

Observing these videos have made me realize the responsibilities of a teacher. There is so much that is to be taken into consideration in making everything fair for the students. Many students have needs that require attention to learn appropriately. As a teacher, it is important to be creative and to make sure all the students are learning reasonably. One thing that I would emulate would be in Case #664. I would make sure my instruction addresses different cultural backgrounds. I think it was amazing how the language arts teacher spoke about the different Historic people who were African-American. I am sure she addressed other cultural backgrounds as well. From Case #243, I would avoid having a special needs teacher in my classroom for only a little while. If I had many exceptional learners in my class, I would want an inclusive classroom. This allows the special needs teacher to always be there to support the students. That would make it easier on me as the regular classroom teacher as well. A classroom environment I would love to teach in would be an environment where everything is planned and organized. When things are unorganized, it makes teaching harder. Having everything laid out will make the day go by smoother. My students will be okay with diversity in my classroom. There is no such thing as one person being better than the other. Everyone has a flaw or something they may not be good at. Discrimination will not be an option in my classroom. No one should be…

The video showed how it was like for the LGBQ community to openly come out and express who they are as a person and that their life is not something that it can't be control by somebody else. This video showed me how parents, friends, and family would reject their kids and friends if they are part of the LGBQ community, but it showed how determination and understanding can create a better understanding of a person. Watching this video it showed me the harsh reality of what the people from the LGBQ community deal with. However, it let me know that many people can understand each other and accept the person as who they…

I choose some take away messages from different sections throughout the film. I will use the information from the video and apply it to my everyday tasks in my future classroom. Starting from the beginning of the film with the “Difficult Times to Processing” section it allows me to understand students with learning disabilities have twice as much to process, question and answer so they need more time. The “Risk Taking” section taught me how students with learning disabilities like reassurance and do not like surprises. If I have a student with a learning disability, I would make sure they knew ahead of time a very important test or quiz and what information they would need to study and help them prepare. The “Behavior” hit me hard for I remember as a child one of my classmates had a learning disorder and would be sent to detention but could not understand why the teacher disliked her when all she kept doing was asking questions. During the film I really enjoyed the “Visual Motor Coordination”, the Mirror trick was entertaining and helpful. I would expect the elementary education students to pay close attention to how hard writing might actually be for students with learning disabilities. “Oral Expression” explained how hard it really is for students with learning disabilities to even speak at times. When I get nervous I begin to stutter which makes me more nervous, I cannot even imagine what an LD child endures all day long, and it would be exhausting. The last section regarding “Fairness”, reminded me how every teacher should be reminded of how in order to be fair you must treat everyone differently and according to their needs.…

This course has given me a more humanistic view of fellow human beings. This is not to say that I did not before have compassion for other human’s beings; rather to say that my understanding of people and what they may be experiencing within their lives has changed some. We judge people everyday based on things such as appearance, speech and the like. If we look at things with a bit more empathy we can truly say that we can or have walked a mile in someone else's shoes. Many times sympathy takes control when really empathy should take hold. Personally, I implement new learning's into my everyday life. I learned to not be so quick to make a hasty decision and that actually hearing someone is different from just listening to them. Carl Rogers said this and I believe it has deep bearings within this course; "An assumption unusual in psychology today is that the subjective human being has an important value which is…

What I learned from this documentary is that we need to step it up with our education needs and provide more students with more help or possible tutors to anyone who needs help and change the negative outcome that we’ve been “labeled” by known as “Dropout Factories”. (Labeling Theory is used) I’ve learned that without education you can’t succeed much in life because you don’t have the knowledge to understand what is needed to keep moving forward. Symbolic Interactionist Perspective is used because people are being treated in certain ways that they lack in education and are fulfilling other people’s points and the expectations of those people who say that they are not going to succeed much.…

September 18th is a wonderful day for the Chileans. This is the day that they celebrate their Independence. This day was chosen because in 1810 that was the day that they started down the road for Independence, though that dream was not fulfilled till February 1818. Parades, which include their traditional cowboys, dances, drinking, traditional food and music are all part of their celebrations. Their cowboys wear flat top hats, colorful ponchos or manta, as well as shiny high heeled boots with spurs. The celebrations take place under a ramadas. A ramadas has a thatched roof made with tree branches and is a temporary open building.…

I found the “My Language” video very fascinating. I never really thought there was a possibility of mentally or psychologically disabled people communicating with the outside world because they communicated differently. I also assumed they couldn’t, simply was not able. It put a new perspective on how I think that they think. This shows you never really know what someone is thinking just by how they are acting or “showing themselves”.…

This video was very cute, and having a child talking during the video instead of an adult I felt gave the video more character. I love the sound of enthusiasm coming from the child, and I feel other students can easily get engaged into reading after watching their other students make videos like this. The last video I chose to watch was one of the most insightful videos as it talks about personal experiences about Tracy Wymer. He talks about a program called Book It where he got gold stars, and once he got enough, he was given a certificate to go to Pizza Hut. Tracy Wymer talks about how this program helped him start reading because he really enjoyed eating free pizza. Something so simple got him reading, and he kept…

I learned many new things from this video. I learned that many people died in the black’s non-violent revolution for freedom and rights. I also learned that most African Americans were paid an average of only about $700. African Americans were denied education at all white schools, and were only allowed a less than average education at black schools. Under the Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education, a number of African American Honors students integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Every day they had to endure abuse from a huge angry mob that protested integration and wanted segregation. I feel that I would not have been able to put up with all that abuse. Those nine students that integrated Central High had great determination and never gave up hope. I also learned that it was a very long and hard struggle for all blacks during the Civil Rights Movement. The KKK terrorized blacks and killed them. Many African Americans were killed before they won the rights that they deserve. I was very proud of all the African Americans that participated in things like the Montgomery bus boycott because it showed that they weren’t afraid of standing up for themselves. I felt joyful that they always had the courage to stay non-violent, because if they turned to violence, the situation would not have turned out the same way. Now I will do anything that I can to eliminate discrimination of anyone because it is a very serious and destructive…

    A Class Divided

The 3rd grade teacher’s use of the discrimination experiment really taught me a lot about racism and discrimination and opened my eyes to many things. First, I couldn’t believe that the 3rd graders were so aware of racism and discrimination. Those children knew that people of different color were looked down upon, called stupid, etc. I never imagined that a young, innocent child could be so hatful. Once the students began the experiment, it was crazy to see how their attitudes towards one another shifter. Simply because the students were different, they were treated like a lesser being. I got frustrated when the lady from the correctional facility got upset for being discriminated against. At one point she said she felt like she was being treated unreasonably and that it was outrageous. After she said that, I really thought about what it would have been like to be a minority back then. I cant imagine what it would be like to be judged, hated, looked down upon, etc. It made me aware of the fact that blacks and other minorities were suppressed for so long partially because if they tried to stand up for themselves they were seen as defiant and awful for going against what the white man wanted them to do. One thing I loved about a class divided was the fact that the white teacher found it so important to tech to her students. As a future teacher, I think the lesson she taught her students was probably one of the most important ones they ever learned. It makes me realize that as a teacher I need to be aware of these issues and try to teach my students to not discriminate, which will allow them to be better individuals. The only thing that I didn’t like about A Class Divided was that the experiment could not be used in today’s…

I prepared and took out of my bag, my notebook and pen to commence to notate the abundance of mistakes that I would see, and somewhere in my mind, hoping to acknowledge the positive things that I liked to add to my crappie hand written notes. After a while of observing and evaluating the video, I comprehended that perhaps the whole requirement of this video is not to observe a perfect interview between client and social worker, but rather to observe to understand the mistakes that could be fixed in order to achieve a better rapport, and to learn to get information from clients quickly and efficiently. After that I started noting all the positive things on one side, and the negative ones the other side, at this point I did not care which side the notes took place, but understanding the value they hold for me: to learn more and to do better next…
