LIFE ORIENTATION

2. FURTHER STUDY OPTION

2.1 Pharmacy is a dynamic, patient-oriented profession committed to fulfilling the health care needs of South Africa and its people. It is a profession that is expanding in new directions to meet the health care needs of all South Africans. Movement is away from the traditional compounding and dispensing of medicine towards a more professional advisory and primary health care role. Through innovative application of knowledge and skills the pharmacist becomes involved in the healing, serving and education - a substantial contribution to the community of which the Pharmacist is an integral part.

The Pharmacy degree provides training in a wide range of interrelated disciplines and therefore offers a variety of career opportunities to graduates. Community Pharmacy involves you in the dispensing of medicines, provision of essential clinical services including screening for cholesterol and glucose levels. In hospital pharmacy you are not only involved in dispensing of medicines, bandages and surgical instruments to outpatients and patients in hospital, but also in administrative management. In Industrial Pharmacy you will be responsible for the research, development and the manufacturing of drugs.

Studying is important in our day to day activities as it helps us survive life's challenges. Studying helps us gain information which widens our capabilities. It also helps us pass our exams in schools and any learning institutions. Studying helps us grow mentally and helps a country to be more progressive since more people are literate.

Studying is very important for your life if you want to achieve something more. if you study hard you can go to college and get a degree. You can be something more than an ordinary man. In today’s life you cannot get anywhere in life if you did not study and you will not be able to achieve your dreams and goals. It is also not possible to survive or live the way you want to because the economy is going down and everyone has to be able to provide for themselves.

I have decided to study further after I have completed Matric. I have decided to study Pharmacy or Optometry. My final decision is to study Pharmacy. After I have researched and done a lot of thinking I feel that this is the better option for me as it interests me. I will have to work much harder in school and apply everything that I have to my school work. There will be many sacrifices I have to make to achieve my goal and also many privileges taken away as well. When I pursue this option there will be many responsibilities that I will have to take on to complete this venture successfully.

2.4 Money is often one of the biggest barriers to following your dream career. There are many possibilities that are offered for financial assistance. Bursaries are available if you have done well at school or if you are not able to pay for your studies. Scholarships from companies, businesses or municipalities are available if you did well at school. Student loans which have to be paid back are available from banks. A learnership is when you earn while you learn for the sector in which you would like to follow a career is also available. A bursary is the option that I would like to use while I am going to study as this is the best option for me.
