What’s gone wrong with democracy: Democracy was the most successful political idea of the 20th century. Why has it run into trouble and what can be done to revive it? Editorial 2014 The Economist, March 01, 12pp Democracy became the world’s most popular political system in 20th century and it is widespread around the world. But now, it is struggling to survive. The editorial journal 2014 article argues that “democracy is going through a difficult time”. So, it shows that even in major democratic countries, democracy is on a war to survival. As reported on dailykos (1936), they are fighting for it. The editorial gives us a view on how democracy has evolved from the birthplace till today and how it is defined by the people like autocrats. And also the flaws of the democractic system. The editorial is consisted of different levels, showing in each level the informations of political systems like democracy. The journal is divided into 4 main chapters, proving that in famous major democratic countries, flaws in system have become greatly noticed and political chaos has increased. It mentions the comparison between the other political systems. And the end results of some systems are also mentioned in this editorial. The 1st chapter is all about the setbacks of democracy. The editor explains some of the setbacks and shows some countries like Ukraine as an example. The editor describes that people wants a rules-based democracy. It’s true. Democracy is a society characterized by equality of social power (John, 2008). Democracy is all about the freedom of speech and freedom of living. In mid 20th century, democracy took hold in the most difficult circumstances possible in countries like Germany. It gave rise to hope among people who were under oppression.
