B. Efore The Great Chicago Fire Of 1871

B efore the Great Chicago fire happened, the summer of 1871 was very dry. Chicago was also made out of all wood, which is the easiest to burn. It was October 8, 1871 in Chicago and a cow kicked over a lantern in a barn located on the southwest side of Chicago. Yet no one is for sure if a cow kicked over the lantern that is what myths say. The barn was on the property of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary at 137 DeKoven Street. Before the fire, there was no type of warning because no one knew that it was going to happen. The fire burned a total of four miles long and one mile wide, burning half of the city. This went on until October 10, 1871 which would be approximately two days later. Chicago was big and had tons of building and streets but due to this fire many were destroyed. The damages left everyone shocked and killed an estimated of about 300 people in Chicago.
The damages totaled out to be about 200 million dollars. Not many people had houses or anywhere to stay during this time, so people moved out of Chicago until damages were fixed. They were worried about fixing these damages and loosing many of their population. They necessarily didn’t have to worry about losing their population because after this fire, they became the fastest growing city in the world. After getting rid of everything that was made of wood and getting concrete they have less worries on this happening again.
