Arguement

By richschit Oct 01, 2014 435 Words
A recent sales study indicates that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent during the past five years. Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants whose speciality is seafood. Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about healthful eating. Therefore, the new Captain Seafood restaurant that specializes in seafood should be quite popular and profitable.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be addressed in order to decide whether the conclusion and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to the questions would help to evaluate the conclusion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The author of the argument made many points (supporting that the Captain Seafood restaurant would be popular). However, the argument is unconvincing because of its logical problems. There are too many assumptions made based on limited evidence.

First of all, the author states that increase of seafood consumption in the city and no specialized restaurants for seafood promises success of the new Captain Seafood. However, it might possible that people eat in the place which is not specialized for seafood but have seafood dishes. So, some investigations is (are) needed to decide the conclusion. The investigation has to address the (this) point above including (a) survey to people for their favor of eat places.(favorite places to eat)

Moreover, the argument mentions that the majority of people are care food, so they eat more seafood. In contrast, they might just express their concern. If it would be the case, people would not have eaten seafood at all and the new seafood place could be less popular and profitable. To confirm this point of view, the author should contain the information about people's actual eating habits. If the argument had contained this, it could be easier to decide correctness of the argument.

Finally, the connection between people not cooking at home and the new seafood place is unclear. The author assumes that people cook less so they eat out. However, it is possible that people eat microwave ready meals rather than eat in restaurants. The author should include the explanation about this point, especially the place people eat in.

Therefore, as stated above, the argument Captain Seafood will be popular is not convincing. The author should contain the imformation about those three points in order to make this argument more convincing.
