SNC 2DO EXAM REVIEW January 2014
The exam is based on the entire semesters work.
Chemistry
1. Label the following on a periodic table: a) Alkali metals b) Alkaline earth metals c) Halogens d) Noble gases
2. Indicate the metals, non-metals and metalloids.
-38100431803. Show the trends for reactivity and atomic radius.

4. Which of the following elements has the largest atomic radius? Why? a) fluorine b) oxygen c) nitrogen d) calcium
Calcium has the largest atomic radius as it has 3 rings of electrons, while the rest of the listed elements have 1.
5. Which of the following elements has the largest atomic radius? Why? a) Be b) C c) N d) O
All 4 elements have the same atomic radius as all 4 elements have only 1 shell.
6. Arrange the following in order of increasing reactivity: Sc, Nb, Li, Ca, Na, Os. Explain your choices.
Os, Nb, Sc, Ca, Li, Na.
In metals, reactivity decreases as you go from left to right across a period and increases as you go down a group.
7. Using the periodic table, identify an element which has seven valence electrons.
All of the Halogens have seven valence electrons.
Example- fluorine, chlorine.
8. Which of the following has the smallest atomic radius? a) S b) Se c) O d) Te oxygen has the smallest atomic radius as it has only one shell.
9. What is an ion?
An ion is an atom that has become stable by gaining or losing electrons.
10. A positive ion is called cation and a negative ion is called anion.
11. Ionic bonds form between a metal and a non metal.
12. Covalent bonds form between two non-metals.
13. What is a polyatomic ion? How do you recognize a polyatomic ion in the NAME of a compound?
A polyatomic ion is a group of atoms which act as a single ion. All polyatomic ions (except ammonium and hydroxide) have the suffix –ate.
14. The roman numeral in the name of a compound indicates the charge on multivalent elements.
15. For the following compounds: i) identify if

    2. The reactivity of the metal increases with each period it goes down. Magnesium is the least reactive and is in the third period with an atomic number of 12. Calcium is slightly more reactive being in the fourth period and having an atomic number of 20. Barium is the most reactive because it is in the sixth period and it has an atomic number of 56. So the farther down in the group they go the more reactive they are.…

Here are some questions about the elements, their properties, and periodicity. In each case, the correct answer is the name of an element (one of the two given). Write the answer in the appropriate space at the right, placing the first letter in the first blank. There are more than enough blanks to fit either element name, so the number of letters in the name cannot be used as a clue. When the puzzle is complete, the Periodic Law will be displayed in the highlighted column.( by Bronwyn J. Nelson, Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Ohio.)…

When the vaporised organic sample passes into the ionisation chamber of a mass spectrometer, it is bombarded by a stream of electrons. These electrons have a high enough energy to knock an electron off an organic molecule to form a positive ion. This ion is called the molecular ion - or sometimes the parent ion. The molecular ion is often given the symbol M+…
