SOAP & DETERGENT

I) Definition of Soap o Soap are sodium or potassium salts of long-chain carboxylic acids o The general formula of a soap : RCOO Na / RCOO K • R is an alkyl group which contain 12 to 18 carbon atoms.

II) The history of soap manufacturing.

▪ Solvay Process - Carbon dioxide ( obtained from heating CaCo ) is passed into concentrated NaCl solution which is saturated with ammonia . NaCl +NH +H O + CO – Na HCO +NH Cl - NaHCO is then heated to obtain soda. 2NaHCO – Na CO +H O +CO .

III) Preparation of Soap by Saponification

Saponification is a process whereby the soaps are prepared by hydrolyzing fats or oils under alkaline conditions.
It is also the alkaline hydrolysis of esters using alkaline solutions.

Fats/ Vegetable oils + concentrated alkalis – soap + glycerol

(Fats- tallow from cow) ( Vegetable oils – palm oil or olive oil)
For example,
- Glyceryl tristearates ❑ is a naturally occuring esters ❑ found in fats or oils.

Example of soap, 1) sodium palmitate, C H COONa 2) Sodium oleate, C H COONa 3) Sodium stearate, C H COONa

□ To enhance the soap’s marketability,additives are used such as perfume, colouring matter and antiseptic. □ Production of soap can be precipitated by adding common salt to the reaction mixture in order to reduce the solubility of soap in water. □ Properties of soap depends on a) type of alkali used for saponification b) type of animal fats or vegetable oils used □ Potassium soap are softer, milder than sodium soap which can be used for bathing.

    The goal of this project was to make, and test four soaps, and two detergents. The purpose of making four different soaps and two detergents was needed in order to decide which one would be best for the environmental group to use in the future that would allow for the safest cleanup of an oil spill while not harming the animals or the environment in the process. It was necessary to test the impact of the four soaps and two detergents by analyzing their different properties based off of their specific characteristics and the wastewater left over from the vacuum filtration procedure. This procedure had to be undertaken in order to confirm which of the soaps and detergents synthesized is most environmentally suitable, and which one would result in the most minimal environmental damage as possible after clean up. Other test that were essential in determining the characteristic and properties of each individual soap and detergent included testing for lather ability, cleaning ability, and solubility. Each soap and detergent was tested for lather ability, solubility and clean- ability, by cleaning dirty lab glass wear by means of mixing a small amount of each soap and detergent in a beaker with water, and creating a lather by the use of a scrub brush. The individual results can be seen in Table 4. The greater the lather, more cleaning ability the soap or detergent was capable of. The test of lather ability was done first by using tap water. The soap will make more bubbles with the soft water than with the hard water, because it reacts with the calcium and magnesium salts to form 'scum', which is insoluble in water when mixed with hard water. This means there is less soap for making bubbles, or for cleaning. The tap water used to test the properties of the soap would most likely be considered hard water more than it would be considered soft which is why the conclusion of the least lather ability meant more cleaning ability.     To find the solubility of the fats, oils, soaps, and detergents, each of them were placed into different solvents to see if they dissolved. None of the oils and fats were soluble in water (H2O), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or hydrochloric acid (HCl), but they were soluble in toluene and partly soluble in acetone. Testing the soaps and detergents for their solubility in water is the most important solubility test because they should form a lather that allows them to clean easily. Most of the soaps and detergents did not readily dissolve in water, but with agitation they all began to break apart. The lard soap was the least soluble in water, while detergent 2 was the most. All of the rest of the soap and detergents were only slightly soluble when initially placed in the water. Detergent 2 was the most soluble in many of the other solvents while lard was the least.
