I‚ Santiago the shepherd‚ have finally arrived at the old‚ destroyed‚ and abandoned church with my flock of sheep. An enormous sycamore tree lies where the sacristy used to be. I might as well spend the night here as it is beginning to become dark. When I awoke from my slightly uncomfortable slumber‚ it was still dark. A strange dream kept on waking me up. I have only had the dream twice. However‚ the worst part of the dream is that I never see the ending of it. I always wake up before I see it.

In the poem “ The Nymph’s reply to the Shepherd”1 Sir Walter Raleigh’s nymph believes the shepherd only wants her for her physical beauty‚ and as her beauty fades his shallowness will be revealed. Raleigh proves this intent by contrasting the idealistic world the shepherd offers with the reality they live in‚ and by criticizing the things the shepherd would her. This viewpoint is important because it highlights Raleighs willingness to highlight a point of view usually not heard in sonnets.

Brigitte Lau argues that the image of German turn-of-the-century soldiers as plotters of Herero “genocide” is inappropriate and certainly inaccurate. I‚ for one‚ certainly do not agree with Lau’s statement. I will be discussing the recent work of Casper Erichsen and a few other writers and scholars to support my argument: The German-Herero war of 1904-8 was genocide. The concept of genocide is a widely debated topic. The determination of genocide within the German-Herero war of 1904-8 has to start with
