One tool used to improve performance of caregivers in a hospital setting is the clinical ladder. The clinical ladder is developed to entice caregivers to develop new skills (Pierson‚ 2010). It also encourages the caregiver to develop leadership skills and to be financially rewarded for the effort. Clinical ladders began cropping up in the 1970s (Pierson‚ 2010).
