Authors:
Prof. Sanmath Shetty and Prof. Arvind Burande

Abstract:
The term “workforce diversity” refers to policies and practices that seek to include people within a workforce who are considered to be, in some way, different from those in the prevailing constituency.

Workforce diversity is an integral part of today’s human resource management. Due to advancement in the business and its resource imperative nature, workforce diversity has gained importance. Various organizations make use of work force diversity to suit its industry requirements.

The restaurant business is a fast growing industry in Indian economy, but still it belongs to the unorganized sector. There are various reasons it makes use of workforce diversity such as, change in the surroundings and increase in the diversity of customer base. The diverse workforce helps the restaurants in an effective marketing strategy as well. Similarly restaurants have to face problems due to local pressures against diversity.

Migration of the skilled workforce from the rural areas to cities like Pune, and the cheaper wages that these workforce demand may be one of the reasons for the restaurants to employ these workers. Also shortage of skilled workers is threatening to hamper the growth of restaurants. Thus, we have to ascertain whether this diversity is because it is required by the business or whether it is done due to lack of choice. These factors are important because it tends to affect the future of the industry.

Through this study, the researchers aim to-

To determine the advantages and disadvantages of maintaining a diverse workforce.

To verify, whether workforce diversity is maintained by choice or by force.

To find solutions to the problems faced, detrimental for the future of the industry.
