COURSE SYLLABUS

Subject Code: Engl 125
Descriptive Title: English for Specific Purposes; English Language Proficiency Assessment in the Nation
Pre-Requisite: Engl 121, Engl 122
Credit: 3 units

I. Subject Description:
This course is intended to develop students’ skills in the use of the English language in the context of teaching profession. Like any course in English for Specific Purposes, it is anchored on the philosophy that the students’ mastery of the English language should be developed, primarily, along his discipline of his specialization.

II. General Objectives:

A. General

At the end of the semester, the students will be able to:

1. Distinguish the relativity and significance of ESP to English language Proficiency Assessment.
2. Assess English language learners.
3. Develop knowledge about assessment.

B. Specific

1. Point out differences of ideas between the usage of ESP in a specific field and English language proficiency.
2. Define English Language Proficiency Assessment.
3. Identify the English Language learners.
4. Enumerate the target feature of English Language Proficiency.

III. National Competency- Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS)

Domain 2- LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Strand 2.1- Maintains a learning environment of courtesy and respect for different learners. Strand 2.3- Communicates higher learning expectations to each learner. Domain 4- CURRICULUM Strand 4.1- Demonstrates mastery of the subject. Strand 4.4- Selects teaching methods, learning activities and instructional materials/resources appropriate to the learners and aligned objectives of the lesson. Domain 5- PLANNING, ASSESSING AND REPORTING Strand 5.1- Develops and utilizes creative and appropriate instruction plan. Strand 5.3- Develops and utilizes creative and variety of appropriate assessment strategies to monitor and evaluate learning.

    CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Context Nowadays, in University, scholars need to learn another language besides their own mother tongue. They will like to learn English language which is the second language we can learn. As a language, there are a lot of skills which we must learn, such as, reading, writing, listening and speaking. What actually reading is? Reading means the action or skill of reading written or printed matter silently or aloud. Moreover, it is also mean as the process of constructing meaning from written texts. Hence, it is not a skill that students must learn separately from other processes.
