Sphygmomanometer

Part 1: Blood Pressure

Sphygmomanometer – device used to measure the blood pressure

Components:

Systolic pressure- the pressure exerted by the heart when the ventricles are contracting.

Also known as the peak pressure.

Diastolic pressure- the pressure exerted buy the heart when the ventricles are dilating.

Also known as the minimum pressure.

THE NON-INVASIVE BLOOD
PRESSURE CONTROLLER

A method in recording the blood pressure that; (1)requires no surgery
(2) provides the researcher with the ability to obtain accurate and consistent blood pressure measurements over time in longterm studies.

• Used to measure blood pressure in rats and mice
• Measures systolic blood pressure on the caudal artery
• Uses a tail cuff system

ADI instrument Set-up

Hardware:
 Powerlab

– data acquisition device

 NIBP

System - outputs the pressure and pulse signals to a PowerLab via a bayonet nut connector (BNC: A type of cable) connection
 NIBP

controller

 Pulse

 Rodent

transducer/ pressure cuff

Restrainer - for securing rat, limiting its movement during experiment.

Pulse transducer/ pressure cuff

NIBP CONTROLLER

POWERLAB MACHINE

Software
 LabChart

- Data Pad feature to get systolic blood pressure values automatically from the
NIBP system

PROCEDURE:
Open: NIBP.adiset.file

Pulse input should show an almost flat line as the pressure input decreases, and should show grouping

After at least ten readings showing a similar groupings, press stop on LabChart

Set up the Powerlab

Start LabChart program. (Press blue button on NIBP when status light on the left of the NIBP turns off)

Scroll along the pulse input, and

The results of the experiment show a percent yield of 34.34% for the first trial (Part A), and a percent yield of 84.0% for the second trial (Part B). The methods for both trials were generally the same, so the large difference is attributed to the fact that the beaker broke before the gravity-filtering step in the first trial. The beaker was attempted to be picked up by the beaker tongs, but as the hot solution was being poured into the filter, the beaker slipped out of the beaker tongs and shattered, leaving some of the product unfiltered and thus not accounted for in the final product. Although the methods were generally similar in both steps, the gravity filtration step was skipped over in the second trial, which may have accounted for the missing 16% in trial 2, but may have also accounted for the overall relatively high percent yield for this trial. Luckily, the actual melting point of benzoic acid fit within the recorded average…

The classic example of adding salt to water leads to a phenomenon named “Boiling Point Elevation.” Impurities form chemical bonds with the solvent in which they are, holding it together in liquid form. Breaking those bonds is difficult, causing a rise in boiling point. A 5.19% error could have occurred from the temperature probe being situated too high above the side-arm. If the bulb of the temperature probe is not low enough, the temperature of the vapor that is in equilibrium with the distilling mixture will not be measured.…

The purpose of the experiment was to determine the gas law that can be used to calculate the volume of H2 gas at STP and to calculate the volume of a mole of H2 gas at STP. The research hypothesis was if the combined gas law is utilized, then the volume of H2(g) can be determined at STP because it compares the initial pressure, temperature, and volume with the final pressure, temperature, and volume. Also, if the volume at STP was divided by the number of moles of H2(g) used in the experiment then the volume of a mole of H2(g) at STP can be determined. The method included producing hydrogen gas by reacting an active metal, Mg with HCl acid. The results showed that the molar volume can be determined by using the combined gas law and dividing…
