Reaction Paper:
The best for me is Application in Agriculture
I chose Application in Agriculture, I chose this because of application in genetics we can eat more yummy foods and healthy foods.
Gene technology is used to improve and develop our food as well as agriculture and forestry. However, genetically modified organisms and products awaken apprehension regarding their affect on people's health and the environment. There are therefore laws that regulate the use and exposure of these organisms.
In the European Union there was a five-year moratorium on the approval of new genetically modified crops, which ended in May 2004 when type Bt-11 corn was finally approved. Still, it is so difficult getting approval of GM products in Europe that other countries have complained to the WTO about a "de facto moratorium". Also, there are national bans in particular European countries on some GM products. The latest development is that The European Food Safety Authority has published a report that is expected to provide a basis, together with public surveys, for the future decisions of the European Commission: Food Safety, Animal Health and Welfare and Environmental Impact of Animals derived from Cloning by Somatic Cell Nucleus Transfer (SCNT) and their Offspring and Products Obtained from those Animals. Ethical aspects was addressed by the European Group on Ethics.
*How is modern biotechnology in agriculture different from traditional plant breeding techniques? Is modern biotechnology simply a more advanced stage in the biotechnology development continuum?
Yes and no. Yes, because both traditional and modern biotechnology involve the transfer of genes from one organism to another. Traditional breeding techniques typically involve the repeated mixing of thousands of genes over several years and many generations of plants to achieve a desired trait. Once the scientists and doctors find a concrete solution, they will be approved by the FDA to release their material to the general public. In the agricultural world, technology has helped us improve plants to become more stable and be able to sustain life in certain temperatures. With the creation of the microscope, we can see what genes we can take out the plant and add to the plant cell, so it can become a super plant. As we grow, global warming is causing the Earth to become hotter each year. Therefore we are then creating plants that can sustain life with less water than the original.
