Mutual Insurance Essay Example
The Mutual Insurance Company of Iowa (MICI) has an office facility in Des Moines, Iowa that processes MICI’s insurance claims for the whole nation (Heizer & Render, 2008, p. 662). Due to the company’s rapid growth, MICI is experiencing insurance claims processing problems to the point where there is an increasing backlog of claims and claimants threatening to pursue legal action (Heizer & Render, 2008, p. 662 - 663). The claims processing manager, Sally Cook, is going to launch a JIT approach in response to the lingering problems. Moreover, Sally is going to implement more standardization in claim forms, in the new claims processing department layouts, and will also develop extensive cross-training programs.
The issue that the company is processing lesser claim forms than it takes in on the front end is very concerning. This type of backlog will eventually lead to clientele seeking legal action and / or seeking new insurance companies to do business with. There is also a cost issue to making some of the reactive changes, i.e., implementation of JIT program and process layout re-coordination. However, there needs to be a cost-to-benefit analysis completed which will weigh the benefits of launching the JIT program and implementing a new process layout against the costs of not taking action. Implementing a JIT layout would reduce distance, space, and labor needs, as well as increase flexibility, which will enable adaptability to changes in the department (Heizer & Render, 2008, p. 662-663). I personally feel that the benefits of implementing a JIT system will outweigh the costs to implement the program; if nothing is done the MICI will lose business.

This can be overwhelming, and the biggest complaint insurance companies make is that the records are incomplete and are returned for further information. This can lead to more cost and time for everyone involved. Most offices have staff meetings to make sure that all members have the correct and up to date coding manuals and that they understand how to use them. Insurance companies have also started to spend a lot of time and money on these staff meetings as well. One main goal is to evaluate the resources used by the billing staff as well as general understanding of the billing codes and that they know how to fill out forms completely and correctly. Some of these meeting have started to take place on webcams and emails rather than actual meeting places. This allows staff members to complete the seminar in their own time and doesn’t take a whole day away from the…

Deutsche Allgemeinversicherung was founded in 1966 by Andreas Steininger. It was one of the world’s largest insurance companies. Around 51% of its business was in Germany with a 60% of its business in the field of retail insurance. Its keys to success were the traditional insurance management and its remarkable customer service. In DA, a typical process flow of a new policy would start by either a customer going to one of the companies branches or contacting a company agent. The customer would fill out an application – sometimes a check was attached- and the application was then sent through the company mail to the Retail Transaction Processing (VEG) division in Hamburg. Also, some customers filled out applications at home and sent them directly to a number of DA locations which would then transfer them to the Hamburg operation. Once the application was received, VEG separated the various parts of the application then scanned it and digitized. The electronic image was then retrieved from a server and delivered to associates desktop client computer. The associate would enter the information on the form into an appropriate database. If the information available in the application was complete a confirmation would be sent to the customer. In case the customer find out something wrong on the notification notice he/she would either call a toll number or send a letter describing the problem. At that point the Customer Problem Resolution division would deal with the problem. On the other hand, if the information in the application was not complete another associate responsible of talking to customers would call the customer to obtain the needed data. The management of DA knew that they delivered a high quality service, but what bothered them was the percentage of the first time accuracy. This number was 99% which made the management believe that there was something wrong with the peoples’ data. Around 10% of the forms were entered into the system with some mistake. The…
