Life Off-Line

When my family’s Internet provider had some mechanical problems that interrupted our service for a week, my parents, my sister, and I thought we would never make it, Getting through long evenings without streaming movies, emails, twitter updates, and internet searches seemed impossible, We soon realized, though, that living off-line for a while was a stroke of good fortune. It became easy for each of us to enjoy some activities alone, to complete some postponed chores, and to spend rewarding time with each other and friends. First of all, now that we were disconnected, we found plenty of hours for personal interests. We all read more that week than we had read during the six months before. Novels and magazines and much more, such knowledge in books we read is too useful for us in our schools and college. Reading has many benefits both mentally and morally. Firstly, your mind will be active and engaged into old age, and reading can help you forget the problems in your life, and get you captivated by the adventures of someone else.
We each also enjoyed some hobbies we had ignored for ages. My sister returned to play on harmonica which she enjoys the most, I played football which was my favorite hobby at all. It’s useful to have time for your hobby which will be a stress relief.
In addition, my sister and I both stopped procrastinating with our homework. We used to make our homework in the last second, but after having much time we start working on our homework on the same day we take it. We must manage our time and what is important come’s first.

Second, we did chores that had been hanging over our heads for too long, there were many jobs around the house that had needed attention for some time. The grass needed to be cut and the roof needed to be clean, we worked a lot and we painted the garden wall and planted flowers.
We had a chance to do some long-postponed shopping. We went to the market and bought some essential things for our home,

As if work wasn’t enough, I had to deal with my family and my fiancé. In the evenings, I had to do the household chores because my mother was taking care of my sickly grandmother and I had to run to do groceries, pay the bills and ensure my baby brother did his homework assignments and take him up in his revision as it was close to exams. Plus I had to cook dinner and since my step-father was away at his security job. If that weren’t enough, my fiancé and I bought a small condominium after I went to oversee…

I learned that I do not procrastinate as often as I thought I did. When I do procrastinate I am usually doing it because my kids need me for something so I put studying off and say that I am going to do it “tomorrow” and really by tomorrow I say the same thing again. So I usually don’t get all my work done until Fridays and Saturday.…

When given the assignment of choosing a behavior of mine that I thought I needed to change, I had to really think hard about it. At first, I thought about doing the obvious of changing my eating and exercise habits. However, that week I had just gotten the results of my anatomy exam, and after seeing the grade I got I knew something had to change. This is when I decided to choose to change the way I look at my school work. For that reason, I chose to focus on my study habits by choosing the behavior of procrastination. I choose this behavior of procrastination because since starting my freshman year of college, I had struggled with getting into the routine of spending time on each subject daily. I had found that my old habits of waiting…

Books are very helpful for many people by developing one’s mind. Books are very important because they help pass time, helps write and think better, and help ones imagination. Hari states, “A book gives the capacity for deep, linear concentration. As Ulin puts: ‘Reading is an act of resistance in a landscape of distraction… it requires us to pace ourselves. It returns us to a reckoning with time. In the midst of a book, we have the choice but to be patient, to take each thing in its moment, to let the narrative prevail. We regain the world by withdrawing from it just a little, by stepping back from the noise,’” which is a very good reason why people should put their electronic devices aside and free themselves from the drama in today’s world which is kind of hard to do now. Very disappointing, I must say.…

    Isolated by the Internet

“Isolated by the Internet” an essay written by Clifford Stoll pinpoints exactly what researchers believe the internet is doing too much of today’s society. Stoll explains in detail that Internet is breaking apart family values, slowing personal interaction, distancing reality, and robbing personal time. Clifford Stoll has provided evidence that the internet is breaking apart many families and distancing them from one another. For example, Stoll expresses that many parents bring their work home, and spend only six to eight minutes a day talking with their children (106). Furthermore, Stoll states that productivity in the home takes away from playtime that even in our alone time work seeps into even the most intimate of moments (107,108). Although internet is a fast, aid in society it can also slow basic personal interaction “These electronic intermediaries dull our abilities to read each other’s gestures ad facial expressions, to express our feelings, to strike up conversations with strangers, to craft stories, to tell jokes” (106). Clifford Stoll states that it causes a person not to learn basic skills such as how to interrupt, how to speak in front of a large audience, or worst when to talk or be silent. (107) He brings in psychologists and scientist points of view that contradict significantly with those of major computing companies. For example Stoll references to psychology professor Philip Zimbardo who states that technological advances cause shyness which is a basic lack of communication skill, where as Intel stated “This is not about the Technology, per se; it’s about how it is used (105,106). Stoll uses Zimbardo’s personal account to explain computer isolation, Zimbardo will occasionally walk down the hallway and say hello and to some this is shocking and feels it is invading their space (110). The inability to communicate is in part due to the isolation of internet. Clifford Stoll insinuates that…

Because my childhood was so filled with literature, the fact that reading is such a substantial part of my life is somewhat expected. The reading material I read then has helped me become the person I am today. As young as Second Grade, I had already read the Harry Potter series, and countless other chapter books that had helped shape my childhood. Even though my preferred genre has evolved since then, my avidity for reading has not faltered. Because of my reading, I learned how valuable the skill of, not only being able to read, but being able to comprehend the text you had read is.This skill has assisted me mature intellectually, such as last year. When I was exposed to new reading material for school, I gained the ability to, not only read more advanced books, but to realize the message that the author was portraying in their novel…

As I monitored my activities during the last three days, I noticed bad habits along the way. As noted on the time sheet, I take about 2 hours to do my homework. However, between those two hours, I take about five minutes or 10 minutes to take check an email, social media site or take a glance at the television. I am certain that if I were productive for two hours doing my homework, I would have probably finished most, if not all, of my homework for the week. Reflecting back on my time sheet, I noticed how much free time I have.…

Twelve missed calls, seventy messages, and thousands of updates are what I came to after one of the loneliest days of my life. Twenty four hours doesn't seem like much but spending twenty four hours away from something so important to you makes it seem like an eternity. During my time away from my phone I found entertainment in things I usually don't do, such talking with my sister and just spending time with my family. I knew being home all day without a phone was going to be tough so I made some plans with friends to go out later in the night, but the time I did spend home alone was horrible. A day without my phone made me realize that I, like most of my generation, rely too much on our phones and electronics for our social needs.…

Reading a book doesn’t shrivel up the brain like watching a movie would do. Our minds are restricted when watching something; movies do all of the thinking and imagination for us. When someone reads, their brain is exercising from all the thinking that’s happening. Instead of staring at the computer screen, reading increases one's vocabulary and writing skills. Whenever I stumble over an unfamiliar word, I jot it down, look it up, and add it to my mental dictionary.…
