    1. Updike arranges details artfully in order to set the story in a perfectly ordinary supermarket. His description of the appearance of the supermarket itself offers a vivid image. Updike talks about a girl in a bathing suit “in the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet padding along naked over our checkerboard green-and-cream rubber-tile floor” (14). This offers the perfect description of a modern supermarket. The way in which Updike describes the three girls walking down the aisles adds to the supermarket image. Updike explains, “The fat one with the tan sort of fumbled with the cookies, but on second thought she put the packages back. The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” (14).     Upon reading Plato¶s ³Allegory of the Cave,´ I was impressed on how well the posed scenariogave such a mentally descriptive metaphor to any society and their stubborn unwillingness to look outsideof conventional ethics.In my eyes, the people inside the caves whose reality consists of the cave and its shadows relateto the people of a society who live their lives, doing whatever they can to meet the norms and fit in. Theseindividuals never question the shadows directly in front of them, as those shadows are the only realitythey know. They have no reason to look beyond or question the shadows because they have no idea thatthere may be more; there may be other ways of living life.The individuals who provide those who are chained with the images, and give them their falsereality are already enlightened individuals of society. These are the people who have already found their way out of the cave and have learned of the true world they live in.     Jonathan Edwards is one of the most dominant figures in 18th century American religion, a fiery revivalist preacher and a pioneer in the Reformed Church, which would eventually be today's United Church of Christ. The fifth child of Rev. Timothy and Esther Edwards, Jonathan was the only boy in their family of 11 children. He was born in 1703 in East Windsor, Connecticut. Edwards' smartness was noticeable from an early age. He went to Yale before he was 13 years old and graduated as the valedictorian. Three years later he received his master's degree. At the age of 23, Jonathan Edwards succeeded his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, as pastor of the church in Northampton, Massachusetts. It was the richest and most influential church in the colony, outside of Boston. Jonathan Edwards married Sarah Pierpoint in 1727. They had three sons and eight daughters. Edwards was a key figure in the Great Awakening, a period of religious passion in the middle of the 18th century.     The jazz concert I attended took place in Fullerton College Theater on November 13, 2012. The Fullerton College Jazz Big Band and J- Train vocal jazz was very organized and well structured. The first song was the Open Invitation which was performed by the J- Train Vocal Jazz. The song was so interesting because the soloists had great voices. Everyone around seemed interested and amused. The J- train vocal jazz also performed the songs “Nancy McFlannery’s Cannery”, and” Fugue in D Mirror”. My personal favorite by the J-Train Vocal Jazz was “Everyone’s Boppin’” because in the beginning of the song the vocalists scat. In the performance two soloists scat at least one time, and the rest of the choir performers sing the chorus. The beat of the song was fast and the instruments that got a solo were guitar and piano. The guitar and pianos solo were amazing because you could see the relationship the soloist had with its instrument which was extremely passionate. The next song performed was “Big Brown Eyes” which was slow and full of patience. The vocalists sing bebop most of the time, and there are four soloists, the drums are just tapping, and the whole tempo of the song is slow. The big band also performed “The Keystone Shuffle”, the instruments being used were drums, bass, guitar, piano, trombone, and then there was a section of the song where the saxophone players battle each other .Both of the saxophones were going at a very fast beat. The next song performed was “Out of Town” which starts with the drums and guitar as bass. The saxophone player joins in and the whole band starts to plays together. They were all on point with each other which made the song easy to listen to. The piano, the saxophone had individual solos and in between the song there was interaction between the two. The concert was very entertaining; I really enjoyed the J-Train and Big Band. Everyone around seemed to enjoy it as well. It was sweet of the big band to dedicate the…

    In John Donne's poem "Love's Deity", the speaker presents the argument that love can not be true love unless both members of the relationship love each other equally. The speaker wishes that he could return to a time before the god of love was born so that he would not be forced to love a woman that does not love him back. The speaker describes the god of love, or Eros, as an immature tyrant who does not consider the other persons feelings when he is coupling two people together. Donne reveals the importance of this argument or idea through the repetition of similar lines at the end of each stanza. While these lines are not identical and could not be considered a refrain, they do bring the subject of each stanza back to the idea that he is forced by the god of love to love one that does not love him. Donne also uses meter to stress important stanzas within the poem. The opening foot of each stanza alternates between an iamb and a trochee. The first and third stanzas begin with iambs while the second and fourth stanzas open with trochees. This change in meter forces the reader to stress the first syllables of the second and third stanzas. Thus the change in meter from unstressed to stressed reveals a harsh tone to the reader. This harsh tone is reinforced with the diction from the two stanzas which include words such as "flame", "plague", "indulgently" and "falsehood". The alternate meter to begin each stanza, coupled with the harsh diction in those stanzas, reveal the negative tone of the speaker and reinforce the argument of the…
