I am interested in surgery for multiple reasons
1) I am interested in surgery for multiple reasons. First, I have always been interested in science, and in particular human anatomy. I feel that surgery is one of the best fields that combines those two topics. Additionally, surgery to me seems like a large challenge, and I personally really enjoy challenges. You are constantly overcoming difficulties in order to help somebody else, which I find to be really fulfilling. Lastly, when you are a surgeon you really never stop learning, which is quality of the field that I really like. In most fields you don’t get to improve your education once you are done with college, but in surgery that is not the case.
2) I possess many skills that will be useful if I am to have an internship with a surgeon. I am very organized and good at taking notes and organizing others belongings. Additionally, I am tech-savvy and could help out with many computer issues or tasks. I am not very shy and have good people skills that may help if I am ever talking to patients. Although I don’t currently have any background in the surgical field, I have excelled in GT biology and am currently doing very well in GT chemistry, which are both important subjects for surgery. I am also planning on taking a course over the summer called “Med School 101” at Vanderbilt’s VSA program, which will hopefully give me some insight on the topic so I can be helpful as an intern.
3) Currently, I am not exactly sure what question I would like to research. I don’t think I know exactly what I would like to research until I see what type of internship I receive and what type of surgery I will be observing. However, because I want to make sure there is enough research on the topic, and that it is something someone my age and with my resources can actually achieve, I think my question will probably focus on the surgeon-patient relationship. For example, a question I find interesting is “What amount of bed rest leads to the fastest recovery for a simple surgery”

Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…
