Charateristics of Epic Heros Essay Example
Epic Hero- A main character in an epic whose legendary or heroic actions are central to his/her culture, race, or nation. Every character involved in the story has their own personality and traits, some of these traits are shared, and some of them are not. Gilgamesh, Beowulf, Hector, and Achilles are characters that are very self-confident, courageous, and skillful, or the opposite!
Self Confident-. A measure of one's belief in one's own abilities. Each character portrayed this characteristic, with Beowulf it was when he went to war with Grendel without any armor on. “I would rather not use a weapon if I knew another way to grapple/ with the dragon and make good boast/ as I did against Grendal in the days gone by.”(“Beowulf” 33) This quote shows that Beowulf is so confident he’s going to win the battle he’s telling his peers he’s not going to wear any armor to defeat the monster Grendel. Gilgamesh shows a great deal of self confidence when he is to defeat Humbaba. “I will defeat him/ in cedar forest”(Mason 48) this quote shows that Gilgamesh has no doubt that he will defeat the enemy when he tells his friend Enkidu before they go off to fight Humbaba. Finally Achilles shows self confidence to when he’s chasing down Hector, like prey. “Achilles shook his head at the armies/, never letting them hurl their sharp spears at Hector.”(Homer 59) This shows that Achilles has confidence in his self, and doesn’t want anyone to take what’s his, he know he can catch up with Hector and he wont stop till he catches up with him.
Courageous - a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger or pain without showing fear. Beowulf shows courageous in numerous times in the story, but one that sticks out is when he is getting ready to fight Grendel’s mom who is bigger and I imagine a lot scarier! “He leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyone’s answer.”(Beowulf) This quote shows that Beowulf was ready when he said he was ready and didn’t wait on anyone to give him the

Being courageous is one of the first qualities that sets a hero apart from a common human being. Being courageous means to stand up to adversity without fear, to continue to forge on regardless of the daunting things one faces. Beowulf was not shy about showing his courage. When he hears of Grendal’s torment to Hrothgar’s kingdom, Beowulf races to their aid. He does not hesitate when he asks permission of Hrothgar to slay Grendal. He knows thus far, they have been unable to defeat the demon. Most people define a hero as a person who has superior or superhuman strength. Beowulf is “the strongest of the Geats- greater / And stronger” than anyone else in the world (lines 110-111). Saying this shows that if Beowulf cannot defeat Grendel then nobody else can. Beowulf shows how intelligent he is in lines 134-137 when “Beowulf arose with his men / Around him ordering a few to remain / With their weapons”. Beowulf is smart enough to realize that if nobody stays with the weapons somebody will steal them, and they will be left unarmed when a war breaks out. To be considered courageous, a person must face something that would frighten most. Beowulf does just that on numerous occasions in Beowulf. Beowulf faces and conquers Grendel in lines 515-517 “The victory, for the proof, hanging high / From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monsters / Arm, claw and shoulder and all”. The mighty water witch, Grendel’s mother, becomes troubled with the loss of her son and wants revenge on Herot. When she attacks Herot, Beowulf takes action and conquers her in lines 643-645 “Her body fell / To the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet / With her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight”. Some heroes use special powers, or costumes to help them win the fights against the bad guys. However, Beowulf believes in being ethical. He does not want to be…

Beside the traits bossy and independent, to make a great hero, the author also gives Beowulf the trait fearless too. At the beginning of the battle with Grendel's Mother, Beowulf just jumps into the lake without any thinking. He knows he could face death but he doesn't care about it. He does that because he wants to end all the demon and monsters. Besides that, he also wants to achieve more glory and treasures from Hrothgar too. For example, the book says on page 53, line 467-469:"...He leaped into the lake wouldn't wait for anyone's answer". The quotes means that in his dictionary, it doesn't have a word "fear" in it.
