Beowulf Is An Epic Hero Essay
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" -Joseph Campbell. The story I'm writing about is the Epic poem call Beowulf, which was translated by Burton Raftel. Beowulf is a hero who defeated many monster that are killing innocent people. In his life, as a hero, Beowulf shows that he is bossy, independent, and fearless; which are all the qualities of a real Epic hero. According to the beginning of the battle with Grendel, we can tell Beowulf is a bossy hero based on what he said. He offers Hrothgar to het him and his people fight alone and other offers. He does it because he thinks he is the one who can beat Grendel so everyone doesn't need to help him. For example, the book says on page 48, line 259-261:"..., …show more content…
According to the story, Beowulf always goes and kill the monsters by himself. Even when he kills Grendel and Grendel's Mother or in the bloody battle with the dragon. For example, the books say on page 57, line 650:"..., Then Beowulf rose, still brave, still strong, and with his shield at his side,...". The quote means even he is old, he still strong, brave enough to go in the battle with the dragon. By that, Beowulf has succeed to kill the dragon by himself. Beside the traits bossy and independent, to make a great hero, the author also gives Beowulf the trait fearless too. At the beginning of the battle with Grendel's Mother, Beowulf just jumps into the lake without any thinking. He knows he could face death but he doesn't care about it. He does that because he wants to end all the demon and monsters. Besides that, he also wants to achieve more glory and treasures from Hrothgar too. For example, the book says on page 53, line 467-469:"...He leaped into the lake wouldn't wait for anyone's answer". The quotes means that in his dictionary, it doesn't have a word "fear" in it. He always volunteer himself to go first no matter how dangerous. For conclude, to become a greatest hero like Beowulf, he has to have these qualities: bossy, independent, and fearless. Beowulf is an awesome hero, he saves many people from the monsters. Even when he has to face the death, he still doing what he said to keep his

Being courageous is one of the first qualities that sets a hero apart from a common human being. Being courageous means to stand up to adversity without fear, to continue to forge on regardless of the daunting things one faces. Beowulf was not shy about showing his courage. When he hears of Grendal’s torment to Hrothgar’s kingdom, Beowulf races to their aid. He does not hesitate when he asks permission of Hrothgar to slay Grendal. He knows thus far, they have been unable to defeat the demon. When Grendal comes to the kingdom that same night, Beowulf, using no weapons other than his bare hands, looks -Grendal in the eyes and rips off his arm, causing him to be mortally wounded. (Lines 750-820) This passage of Beowulf is a great example of what it means to be…

Most people define a hero as a person who has superior or superhuman strength. Beowulf is “the strongest of the Geats- greater / And stronger” than anyone else in the world (lines 110-111). Saying this shows that if Beowulf cannot defeat Grendel then nobody else can. Beowulf shows how intelligent he is in lines 134-137 when “Beowulf arose with his men / Around him ordering a few to remain / With their weapons”. Beowulf is smart enough to realize that if nobody stays with the weapons somebody will steal them, and they will be left unarmed when a war breaks out. To be considered courageous, a person must face something that would frighten most. Beowulf does just that on numerous occasions in Beowulf. Beowulf faces and conquers Grendel in lines 515-517 “The victory, for the proof, hanging high / From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monsters / Arm, claw and shoulder and all”. The mighty water witch, Grendel’s mother, becomes troubled with the loss of her son and wants revenge on Herot. When she attacks Herot, Beowulf takes action and conquers her in lines 643-645 “Her body fell / To the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet / With her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight”. Some heroes use special powers, or costumes to help them win the fights against the bad guys. However, Beowulf believes in being ethical. He does not want to be…

Beowulf grew up a fighter and knew he was destined for greatness in battle as one of the most supreme warriors to roam the mortal world. Beowulf was not fond of recognizing personal downfalls and weakness. Instead, he carried himself with confidence, a sense of swagger, and the heart of a lion. The hero of the time, was much more interested in fighting and building his individual reputation rather than taking over King Heardred’s throne. When the time comes where Beowulf is forced to step into the spotlight and become king, he does not just accept the normal responsibilities that come with being king. Beowulf takes the task by the horns, he doesn’t let his new duties blind…

Beowulf’s confidence throughout the story serves him as an asset in his fight against Grendel and Grendel’s mother, but when he needed it the most it served as a tragic flaw when fighting the Dragon. Beowulf had relied on this trait to help him in battle, but when he was no longer in heroic condition it failed him and lead to his death. Beowulf believed that he could beat almost any monster with or without a weapon due to this confidence, when he was in his prime, such as when he fought Grendel and Grendel’s ,other. When he challenged the Dragon he was no longer in heroic condition, he was almost a normal soldier, but his confidence lead him to believe he was still in heroic condition and could win that fight.…
