Digital Computers
There are two distinct families of computing device available to us today, the all pervasive digital computer and almost forgotten analog computer. These two types of computer operate on quite different principles.
Digital computer operates on digital data such as numbers and proceeds in discrete steps from one state to next. It uses binary number system in which there are only two digits 0 and 1. Each one is called a bit.
The digital computer is designed using digital circuits in which there are two levels for an input or output signal. These two levels are known as logic 0 and logic 1. They can give more accurate and faster results.

Technically, depending on how the terms “digital” and “computers” are defined, devices such as calculators, cameras, smartphones or any accessory with a micro-processing chip could be considered a type of digital computer. However, today digital computers are most commonly referred to as personal computers, also known as desktops and laptops. Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM are only a few of many companies manufacturing personal computers.
Digital computer is well suited for solving complex problems in engineering and technology. Hence digital computers have an increasing use in the field of design, research and data processing.
Digital computers in general are classified into major categories based on.
(a). According to the purpose of the computer.
(b). According to the operation size of computer.

(a) Classification as per purpose of the computer:
Classification of digital computer as per the purpose of their use-:
1. General purpose digital computers.
2. Special purpose digital computer.
1. General Purpose digital computers: These computers are theoretically used for any type of applications. These computers can be used in solving a business problem and also used to solve mathematical equation with same accuracy and consistency. Most of the computers now are general purpose digital computers.

When the conversion takes place between analog and digital it becomes the base of all communication technologies. Just about all hardware uses digital so it is very important to convert analog signals into digital to perform support for hardware applications. All hardware devices are aimed to be digital. Therefore, devices in the future will not need conversion because they will already be digital. There are many examples of analog to digital like a scan picture. The analog information provided by the light present in the picture is converted to digital signal to complete the process. The digital conversion use the means of binary coding for data transmission and output. The digital signals work only by using only two numbers known as one and zero (Analog to Digital). When users convert the signal to digital it allows plenty of data to be stored on a single device. This help save bandwidths and space. There are seven ways that signals are structured; direct conversion, ramp compare, successive approximation, delta encoded, pipeline, time stretch, and sigma delta. When the hardware uses one of those signals the destination hardware will find the best data encryption and utilization. The most common analog to digital conversion are the digital TVs, cameras, and other video captures. The newer microcontrollers’ technologies are used to convert analog to digital by reducing the size of the chip to get a better signal.…

The basic components of all computer systems whether they are microcomputers or supercomputer all contain six basic building blocks: input, output, memory, arithmetic/logical unit, control unit and files. A computer system needs input devices for entering data into the computer for processing. The most common input devices are keyboards and mice. Input devices have now expanded to other methods such as voice input, magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), Optical character recognition (OCR), scanning bar code label, etc. The output devices are used to produce the results of the processing done by the computer. The most common output devices include computer screen or monitor, printer, or writing output on CD or DVD. Computer memory or main memory holds the program instructions and data. All data flows are to and from memory. Arithmetic and Logic Unit consist of incredibly small integrated circuits on a silicon chip. It is mainly responsible for arithmetic function of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculation, logical comparison and decision. Computer files storage devices sometimes called secondary or backing storage is used to store programs and data when they are not being used. Secondary storage is nonvolatile. File devices include hard disk drive, magnetic tape drives, flash drives, and CD or DVD. Control Unit provides the control that enables the computer to take advantage of the speed and capacity of its other components. It controls the sequence of instruction to be executed, controls the flow of data, interpret instructions, and it regulate timing of processor (Brown et al., 2012).…

Digital signals are complex waveforms that can be described as a discontinuous waveform having a finite range of levels. You can recognise a digital signal by the wave created, if the wave keeps going up and down in straight lines and forms squares and rectangles these are digital signals. Digital signals assume two states (logic 0 and logic 1). Where the signal changes from one state to another, the signal can be said to be discontinuous. As the signal state changes from 0 to 1, a finite time is required for the voltage to increase to the maximum value, and a corresponding time is required for the voltage to fall when the signal state changes from 1 to 0. Each voltage pulse in a digital signal is a signal element. Encoding each data bit into signal elements transmits binary data.…

Unlike analog voltage or current signals, digital signals do not vary smoothly and continuously, but rather in steps or increments. Digital technology generates, stores and processes data as a string of binary digits, or "bits"--ones and zeroes--and its role in society since the early 1990s has been compared to that of the railroad during the Industrial Revolution.…

Digital circuits are circuits that use signals in digital form instead of analog forms. One distinctive feature of a digital signal is that it assumes discrete values, most of the time two values. A digital signal takes time to change from one value to another, and assumes intermediate values during transmission (Verma). Steady values are slightly inaccurate. Voltages within certain ranges are guaranteed to be interpreted as certain permitted values. In this technological era, digital circuits are more preferred in industries because of the many advantages they possess. Advantages range from good transmission due to low chances of being interrupted, to high efficiency.…
