A Threat To Security - Illegal Immigration While the argument of open borders is highly debated, I believe that the best way to solve the problem of illegal immigration is to highly enforce the laws that were set to defend the United States against illegal immigration, and try our very best to keep out all immigrants that attempt to cross our borders without permission. Crossing our borders illegally causes many problems with the populations of both the United States and Mexico. Along with that, it too causes problems with crime levels and economics. If the borders were to be open, all of these problems would reach a most undesirable height. The population of illegal immigrants in the United States is a growing problem, literally. It is estimated by government and academic sources that the number of illegal residents in our country is about eleven million, as of 2010. This could very well be a problem, because it can lead to the overpopulation of some areas, which would devastate our need for jobs, space, money, and products. Also, if we were to open borders, the rapidly-increasing population would prove to conflict with our immigration quotas. Even if we were not to strongly enforce our immigration laws, our quotas would be very rapidly filled, leading still to illegal immigration. If we were to get rid of the quotas for Mexico and other large immigration countries, significantly more people would be entering from those countries and quickly overpopulating our country than any other countries, of which we still have immigration quotas on. The population of illegal immigrants would be nothing but a problem, so even if we were to open our borders, the population the then 'legal immigrants' would prove to be problematic. Crime is also a very present and threatening problem that relates to illegal immigrants.     A major problem the United States faces today is illegal immigration. The United States is a country founded upon immigrants who have come here legally and made productive lives. It is estimated that eleven to twelve million undocumented immigrants live and work in the United States, roughly one in every twenty workers, according to a study by the Pew Hispanic Center (Pew Hispanic Website). Most illegal immigrants that enter the country do so from the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2007, some 880,000 people were arrested illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico broder. According to the American Federation for Immigration Reform (FAIR), eighteen percent of illegal immigrants fall below the poverty line (Fairius.org). This is compared to eleven percent of the poverty stricken individuals who are native born. The implications from this is simple for the United States: illegals are twice as likely than native born citizens to apply and receive some sort of federal assistance that is taxpayer funded. Annualy state governments are spending anywhere between eleven billion to twenty two billion dollars to provide aid to illegal immigrants. Another major problem faced by our current policy of allowing illegal immigrants into our country is approximately two billion a year of tax payer dollars are spent on WIC, food stamps, school lunches, etc. Our country spends two and a half billion dollars a year on Medicaid for illegal immigrants and roughly seventeen billion a year is spent…
