A Stolen Life
I: Bibliography:
Dugard, Jaycee. A Stolen Life. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2011. print.

II:
1. based on a true life story/is a first person narrative
“All I have is the tiny butterfly ring on my pinkie that my mom gave me.” (Dugard p.20) This quote from the story shows that the book is in first person because it uses the word “I”. It also shows that this is based on a true life story because Jaycee’s mother had given her a ring in that she remembers wearing in the flashback of this moment.
2. includes author’s thoughts and feelings/includes the writer’s opinions
“This made me think she was really starting to like me.” (Dugard p. 66)
This quote shows that Jaycee was feeling that she (Nancy) was finally starting to like her. This is a feeling Jaycee felt when she was being held captive and she was trying to make the best of it by making herself think that Nancy actually liked/ cared for her.
3. includes a moral lesson or something to learn
“...Given the right tools, families can survive through the worst conditions.”
To me, this means that families must stay together and always support each other no matter what happens, even something devastating like being held captive for your whole life. Loyalty toward your family is one of the most important things in the world because blood is thicker than water.

III. Figurative language
Metaphor. "My past and present were the two candles we started with…I 've noticed my past melting more and more…" (Dugard, p. 235) This shows that Jaycee is beginning to understand that her past is not what she is made of. She sees that if you "melt" away your past, you learn to live in the present everyday and not focus on the horrible things that might 've happened to you earlier in life. This gave me a clear understanding that you need to let go of whatever may be holding you back in your life and focus on the candle that is the present.
Simile. "It felt like I had a ticking time bomb on my head just waiting to go

“A family is a risky venture, because the greater the love, the greater the loss. That’s the trade-off. But I’ll take it all.’’ This quote means that the greater you love a person the harder the loss of that person is to you. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke relates to this quote in her book Inkheart in chapters 29 and 30. I agree with this quote because the quote could relate to you or someone else.…

In almost anyone’s eyes, family comes first. You would do absolutely anything for them, and in the novel Kindred by Octavia Butler there is no exception. Although the novel concentrates on the previous existence of slavery and the harsh realities of racism, another theme that is not exactly centralized is how far an individual will go in order to protect their loved ones. In this particular novel, there are two major examples on how far a person will go for their family. On one end, you have the slaves protecting their loved ones from being sold, and on the other hand you have the strong bond between the main characters Rufus and Dana. Family can be described in many ways, a close relationship among a group of people through blood or even non-biological friends. Although there are so many differences, the one thing that remains similar between the two groups is the love and trusting relationship you posses.…

‘If you have a Family, then you have life as a whole since the rise and fall of every individual depends solely on the family also the family forms the basic unit of our society; therefore our communities are only as healthy as our families. Let us look at the family as a body of individuals who seek for unity .Each individual member of a family has the need to be accepted not by, but as part of the whole body. Throughout any human’s life you are going to face hardships, and the decisions you make in those troubling times prove who you truly are. Even when you feel like it is just you against the world, your family should always have your back. For some people all they have is their family, and those people will stand in the face of danger to protect one of their own. Alas, a plentiful amount of people would rather believe in self-preservation when their family is in the midst of a life threatening altercation. Basically, these people in particular would not go out of their way to save a relative from the grips of death, instead they would rather escape with their own lives. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, the theme of father and son relationships is haunted by self-preservation over love and loyalty.…
