A REPORT ON AUTOMATION OF CONVERTOR TILTING DRIVE USING PLC AND VVVF DRIVES

Abstract: Industry is a home of various kinds of machines that are used for numerous processes and treatments. The control and working of these machines have been automated through the use of PLCs. Automation has resulted in faster production rate, increased accuracy, better quality and reduced faults and human errors. PLCs and VVVF drives are used in most of the sections and units at VISL because of their simple methods of programming, energy saving and other advantages. The following report aims at suggesting improvement in basic oxygen furnace by automation of converter tilting drive using PLC and replacing the present motoring system by VVVF drives.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 History
Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL) is a Special Steel Plant of ‘Steel Authority of India Limited’ (SAIL) and is located in the town of Bhadravati in Shimoga district of Karnataka. Over the past several years it has been a pioneer in production of high quality alloy, special steels and pig iron. The Plant was started in 1918 as ‘Mysore Wood Distillation and Iron Works Ltd.’ by one of the greatest engineers of India Shri. M Visvesvaraya, the first Hot metal being produced in 1923. It was renamed as VISL in 1976 in respect to its founder. VISL became a subsidiary of SAIL in 1989 and then was completely merged into SAIL in 1998. It is now a Public Sector Company and has received the ISO: 9001:2000 certificate for steel production through rolled and forged routes and pig iron production.

1.2 Process
The production of Steel in VISL follows the following route : Blast Furnace  Basic Oxygen Furnace  Ladle Refining Furnace  Vacuum Degassing  Casting. Of this the Basic Oxygen furnace is a very important part of the whole process. Because it is here that exothermic reaction takes place to separate Carbon from molten pig iron obtained from Blast furnace. Heating is done by burning oxygen. Carbon content is reduced from 4% to 0.05%. At present, convertor’s tilting drive in VISL is controlled by 4 step contactor method. The LD converter in basic oxygen furnace needs to be tilted for the metal to be poured out. The torque and speed control of tilting of converter is done by using slip ring induction motor by changing 2

the external resistance. Adding external resistance makes the rotor resistance high during starting, thereby reducing the rotor current and maximising the starting torque. Resistance is changed by changing its length by shorting of resistance at different lengths. 1.3 Scope and Advantages

Automated system is expected to perform and control all the present operations by using PLC. In addition to that the speed control is also done by changing frequency and voltage of ac signal. This is done by using variable frequency variable voltage drive (VVVF).
