The British naturalist and politician John Lubbock wrote, “Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it.” I agree with John Lubbock, because I believe we choose our character traits. We make decisions in our lives, some life changing decisions, some small irrelevant decisions, that could change our minds according to how we process our choices. Our personality affects our character heavily, our personality tells one everything about us. Our character is also affected by our ability to perceive things positively or negatively. I believe that we chose our character traits by the decisions that we make, our personality, and our ability to perceive things in a positive or a negative way.…

Grant Wiggins, the protagonist African-American main character in A Lesson Before Dying, has a tone that develops dramatically beginning with his initial malleable attitude, developing into serious intrigue in formerly-charged-to-death inmate, Jefferson. Scout Finch, protagonist Caucasian main character in To Kill a Mockingbird, seems to have generally a consistent spunky and energetic tone throughout the novel, with a coming of age spin. Both characters face their personality and race in effect with their tone.…

The quote I have chosen is, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm”. This is one of Winston Churchill's most well known quotes. This quote was said during his reign as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. It is unknown as to where this quote came from but I found it to be very captivating. I feel like Churchill is trying to get the point across that in life it is normal to not be perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and each failure shapes you as a person. Churchill is saying that if you put your mistakes in the past without changing who you are, it makes you stronger and more successful than someone who fails to do so. Being afraid of failure gets you nowhere in life so Churchill is stating that everyone should strive with great enthusiasm in order to be their best self.…

One of the ideas behind Borge’s Garden of the forking paths is that God allows people to choose. They are free to make their own decisions and forge their own path, but it is one’s path which defines their character. Decisions explain one’s motivation and determination to act on those decisions which by definition means character. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling, characters as Neville, Hermione, Professor Quirrell and Harry Potter defend the idea that people’s choices define their character.…

Throughout history, the concept of fate has been a common theme among works of literature and man's thought in general. Does he have the ability to choose his path through life, or is his destiny laid out before him? This question takes on new meaning in modern society, as people try to make their own choices while conforming to the structure of society and its norms. While society, with its customs and laws, seems to limit a person's freedom, the person is still essentially free to make their own choices.…

I agree with the statement “the choices and actions one takes directly determine the directions one’s life will lead for better or worse”. I agree with this statement because of the butterfly effect that was in every movie, article, and book. Like Thor, the challenger explosion, and the sleeping bear dunes.…

When most people think of character they often associate it with the idea of having to do the right thing. I on the other hand believe character is more than just doing what is morally righteous. Our experiences, obstacles and most importantly, passion define our true character. Passion establishes the difference between obligation or choice and giving up or persevering. Our actions result from the passion we choose to dedicate towards different aspects of our lives including school, work, extracurricular activities and community service. Everyone values these aspects differently and that is what allows for each of us to have our own unique character. I believe people have a more powerful influence when they have a true sense of passion for what they are doing.…

Young teenagers try too hard to become adults. Sometimes many actions teenagers think are mature, but always end up backfiring on them. Richard Wright’s “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” demonstrates how a young teenager seeks a level of maturity and independence that he’s not yet ready for. For example, Dave thinks he is ready to show everyone that he is a man, but in the end his actions backfire leaving him with in a position with less respect than he had before.…
