A Letter on How to Improve Marriott Hotels in the UAE
You are one of the board committee members of Marriott hotels in the UAE. The hotel chief manager asked the members to write him a letter about how to improve Marriott hotels in the UAE. Give at least two opinions/reasons.

Dear Mr. Black,

Our hotels in the UAE are among the best in terms of service and recreation. However, our prices are rated among the 10 highest in the Gulf region last year. Therefore, the number of our guests have declined. I have studied our price list, and found that we can do two things to make our prices more convenient for our guests. I think the number of gusts would increase again within six months if we do the following.

Firstly, in the long run, the prices of vegetarian dishes is much higher than in other hotels. This is because we our vegetable and fruit supplier rates are 20% higher than average. Therefore, I suggest that we change the supplier. We can begin with this next year since our contact with the supplier is due was recently renewed. The supplier of Hilton hotels, King Vegetable Co., is among the best in terms of quality and prices. We can start negotiations with King Vegetable Co. in order to prepare the amended price list. This would assist us to better analyze and assess the expected benefits.

Secondly, in the short run, and in order to attract new guests, we need to make some discounts. Since our guests are usually couples, I suggest we make discounts on double-bed rooms. In addition, we may offer free breakfast and dinner as well. This would encourage couples seeking weekend holidays to opt for our hotels.

In sum, I believe that the core of our problem lies in the price list. We need to make a relatively cheaper price list in order to be able to compete in the market. I strongly believe that the two points I raised above, would definitely assist in this regard.

Yours sincerely,

Mariam

I have observed from my previous experience within the hotel market in Dubai that in similar conditions a 33% reduction in room rates results in a doubling of demand suggesting a relatively high price elasticity of demand (-3). This suggests that in the demand luxury hotel market in Dubai is sensitive to room rates. The income elasticity of demand for such a service in Dubai is likely to be relatively high given its status as a luxury item, given the global nature of the market it is complexed to access how the individual income effects for each feeder market. There are cross elasticities that will have an impact on demand, key factors to consider is the cost of air travel to the U.A.E. Since such a high proportion of hotel room occupants arrive by air there is likely to be a high cross priced elasticity between demand for hotel rooms and the price of air travel. Looking ahead to the first half of 2012, effects on aviation travel may include oil price variations and…

Despite three consecutive years of growth in lodging revenue, Amber Inn & Suites realized four consecutive unprofitable years, and projections show the fifth year will continue the downward trend. Amber Inn & Suites target market is the business traveler. According to American Hotel and Lodging Association, one-half of all guests are business travelers and one-half are for leisure or family vacations (Kerin and Peterson, 2007). The business travelers largely occupy rooms during the weekday from one to three days, whereas the leisure or family vacationers occupy rooms over weekends from one to three days. Additionally a corporate analysis shows business travelers will decrease by 2 percent, adversely pleasure/vacation travelers will increase by 1 percent. The challenge for Amber Inn & Suites’ SLT is to create a marketing and advertising expenditures to expand occupancy of family and leisure vacationers, while maintain their core business traveler. Additionally, they have to decide whether to revamp the frontier strategy initiated in 2005 to grow brand awareness in the South West. Lastly, they must agree whether the -25 percent weekend rate special promotion that replaced the weekend free night stay is achieving the desired goal.…

Marriott Hotels, Resorts, and Suites are known world wide for their superior hospitality company. They were founded in 1927 by J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott and currently operate around 3,000 lodging properties in the United States as well as 67 in other countries (Malhotra, 2010, p. 517). Marriott is a name that is known by most people and continues to grow and improve its services throughout time. The hospitality industry has a tough job at times because they are responsible for making people feel as if they never left home. Whether this is by providing something as simple as a bed and a shower or by having extremely luxurious rooms with lavish pools, gyms, and excellent service. Either way, Marriott has to provide a room and services that make people want to stay at their location when they are away from home and come back each and every time. This job is difficult, but to their advantage, they are able to use marketing research as a means to get quality information on problems or issues that are of importance.…
