A Bronx Tale Summary
Gangster Sonny is the big man in Calogero's Bronx neighborhood. A shooting witnessed by Calogero is the starting point of a lasting bond between the gangster and the small boy. Father (bus driver Lorenzo), however, disap- proves. Calogero grows up under the wings of both men, torn between his own natural honesty and his fascination with Sonny. C's neighborhood cronies get involved in theft, use of guns, racial fights. When C meets girl, things don't become easier. Calogero Anello is a 9-year old child living in the Bronx - notorious for gangster bars, racist people and aggressive nature. Calogero witnesses a shooting in the street involving local big shot gangster, Sonny (Chazz Palimentri), but refuses to grass him to the police. Sonny grows fond of the child and begins to teach him how things are conducted on streets. Calogero's father (Robert DeNiro) is a working man who wants his child to grow up and make his money honestly, and does not want him to mix with Sonny. Despite his father's disapproval, for eight years he continues to see Sonny, and receives a 'street' education from him. Despite being a gangster, Sonny loves Calogero and teaches him that being a gangster is too risky and dangerous. However Calogero misinterprets Sonny's message, and still gets involved with racist fights with his friends. Things get worse when he falls in love with a black girl.     During their childhood, Sonny and his brother are trapped in the city of Harlem, a city of drugs and poverty. A city where the community must team up in order to survive, but often fails to come together. The narrator depicts the inescapabilty of Harlem as he brings his brother back to Harlem, “Some escaped the trap, most didn't. Those who got out always left something of themselves behind, as some animals amputate a leg and leave it in the trap” (Baldwin 419). The two brothers were trapped in a life surrounded with pain and discrimination due to the surroundings of Harlem. Sonny is brought back to the environment that he was trying to escape. He is unable to live with the realities of Harlem. His environment engulfs him as he develops a drug habit that many of the characters in the story can relate to. The only way he is able to escape the sufferings of reality is through the use of drugs. His drug use dissolves the inequalities that he faced while in Harlem and as an African American during the period, making them unrecognizable for brief moments.     In this Italian neighborhood, where Calogero grew up, there were many different dynamics. His father was a bus driver for the city, and always looked out for his son not to get into trouble. One of the main deviant influences in the film was an Italian mafia that operated in a bar across the street. Every day as a young boy, Calogero mimicked what the mobsters were doing, especially Sonny. Sonny was the mafia boss in the neighborhood; Calogero saw how everyone respected him. One day Calogero witnessed Sonny kill a guy in front of his house, which seemed to be over a parking space. When the police came upstairs to ask the boy who did it, he did not “rat.” After the questioning, Calogero said to his father “I did a good thing right?     After reading "Sonny's Blues", the first thing to analyze is plotline, which is the basis for every story we have and is what gets us, the reader, to pay attention to minor details in the story. With plotline, there are five areas where the story is separated, which are the introduction, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the conclusion. The story, "Sonny's Blues," begins with the exposition that sets the scene, introduces the main characters, tells us what happened before the story opened, and provides any other background information that we, the reader, need in order to understand the events to follow.
