“Redskins”
This article has an impact on all of us. I don’t agree that the word ‘Redskins’ should be banned in the state of California. If this ban would travel around the world, a lot of schools would have to change their name. Our school has the Redskins name and for the name Redskins to be banned, we would have to change the name of our school. I don’t know why people are offended by this particular word, there are so many other problems in the world that we should be focusing on. People are whining to the world about all this when we should be focusing on how many wars and battles are going on in the world right now. I don’t believe that the word ‘Redskins’ should be banned, because there is a lot of names and schools that we would have

A comparison of the two articles is, they are both supporting the law to make the word ‘Redskins’ banned. You can tell from reading the articles that people are trying to move us to their side that the word ‘Redskins’ is bad and should be banned. A contrast on these two articles are, in the first article, it gives information and quotes on what is going on. The second article talks about how a person thinks ‘Redskins’ is a bad word. Another contrast on these two articles is, the second article explains how calling people one word is different from calling people another word. An example of this is, calling people “a Jew” is worse than calling people “a Jewish person”. People are trying to make the word ‘Redskins’ into something impolite, just like what we saw in the example. In the first article, its explaining when this ban goes into effect. Evidence to go with this statement is, “The law, which Gov. Jerry Brown signed Sunday morning, goes into effect Jan. 1, 2017.” These were comparisons and contrasts about the two articles, California Becomes First State to Ban ‘Redskins’ Nickname and Why ‘Redskins’ is a Bad Word. In all examples of satire the NFL is credited to the allegations of their players and crimes and what they do to combat it. In the first article it talks about all the wonderful thing the NFL is doing and how I show to the world like an open book, but then calls everyone very brash names. This shows that the writer believes the complete opposite, that they are very lucrative. I believe this article is mediocre at best for satire. This article show the flaws of the NFL and sandals, but it doesn’t do anything for the reader, it didn’t make me feel any different. The next example is the info-graphic. The info-graphic shows a couple watching TV. The girlfriend ask if they can watch Dr. Phil, but the boyfriends just shrugs it off and continues to…

The general argument made by John McWhorter in “Why ‘Redskins’ Is a Bad Word” is that not every thing you say about race is offensive but you should be careful. He states, “It may not be mean to tell someone their skin happens to be reddish. But it’s mean to call someone a Redskin (6)” This shows that he doesn’t believe that every thing referred to the color of your skin is “racist” but a slur is. McWhorter also believes that there are better alternatives from words like Redskin. He shows us “ ‘crippled’ had a less neutral connotation after a while, upon ‘handicap’ was a fine substitute (6)” This shows us that he thinks that there can be healthier substitutes than Redskins. I think Mr. McWhorter’s thought process isn’t logical at times and…

Initially, all actions that are made should be made with the best outcome, not demonstrated in trying to ban all mascots for teams and schools. In the cartoon “ Mascots” Phil Hands informs caucasians that mascots for teams and schools is wrong because we disrespect the culture and the Native Americans. The author refuses to take action. By making a school bill board discriminating Americans, Hands states, “It’s not meant to be offensive”. The author is representing how they feel towards caucasians. The action of the cartoon is virtue ethic, even though we use mascots for teams and schools we don’t disrespect Native Americans or their heritage. A school or team can use a Native American mascot as long as we don't disrespect them or their heritage.…

Both articles are written about the same topic however, each has its own style, tone, audience, persona, and occasion. Duke writes casually to ‘rally up to troops’ from his conservative readers. The New York Times Editorial Board writes formally to defend their opinion to the newspaper’s readers. While each writer has their own opinion and voice, it is the elements of style, tone, audience, persona and occasion that make an author’s work…

“The Redskins”, “The Blackhawks”, “The Cleveland Indians”, and other sport teams/organizations have very offensive derogatory mascots and slurs towards Native Americans. Many Native Americans are very offended by these sports team using their culture in a very racists way. They argue that Native Americans are people not mascots, and they also portray their body features very “savagely”. The redskin, feather in the hair, old wrinkled skin, war paint, etc. all these features are stereotypes and disrespectful.…

The Redskin name has been a problem for over 50 years, so this isn't a new problem. The term Redskin was first used in 1699 by the Europeans. They used this word to refer to the red pigment of their skin. The Europeans was the first to use this term the “Redskin”. Back then the Europeans would scalp the Redskins for fun. Then in the 1950's and 1960's the “Redskin” name was used as savage enemies in western films. This name does have a horrible history behind it. This controversy has been going on for over 50 years and no one has paid attention until now.…

Teams haven’t had to change their names or logos, so this means that people generally aren’t finding it offensive. According to a recent poll done by The Washington Post, it was determined that 9 in 10 Native Americans are not offended by the Redskins name. The question asked, “The professional football team in Washington calls itself the Washington Redskins. As a Native American, do you find that name offensive, or doesn’t it bother you?” According to their data, they showed that 90% said it did not bother them, a mere 9% said that it was offensive, and 1% had no opinion. I believe that these surveys, help take steps in the right direction. This data shows that my belief can be reached because the majority of people who participated in the survey said is wasn’t offensive. In my opinion, these names should be seen as mascots and people should respect the origins of how these successful teams got the Native American…

Aside from professional sports teams having offensive names, high school and college teams also have offensive names. In Greenly, Colorado at the University of Northern Colorado, their mascot is the Fightin' Reds. Of course, this name sounds very racists, depicting Native Americans in a very harsh manner. Students on the basketball team renamed their team, The Fightin' Whites. They were trying to depict the 1950's style of the average American male. Their slogan for their team is "Every thang's going to be all white." By making this new mascot and new slogan, the basketball team was trying to get their city council to talk about the insensitive team mascots that their school, along with thousands of other schools have. In Eaton, Colorado the people who live there are amazed by all the madness that is going on about the school's mascot. They are perfectly happy with the mascot, and to them it seems like it would be breaking tradition if someone were to change their mascot. Even though there are many people who hate the school's mascot and vote for it to be changed, there are also some people who love it and do not want to be changed. Some people think it is a honor for a school's mascot to be named after their culture. But the number of people for the mascots do not even compare to the number of people opposed to the mascots. I disagree with California Ban on the word ‘Redskins.” I disagree because Native Americans are the only one making it a bad name. No one else is using Redskins in a bad way or even thinks of it in a bad way. All reskins means is that someone skin has a red tint. It’s names of many schools and some famous sports teams and they shouldn’t have to change their name because Native Americans think of it in a bad way. Everyone who has had to change their name because of California ban should get to change it back. Schools and sorts teams now have to change their mascot, their name and if it’s a school they might even have to change their company. I disagree with California’s ban and I’m sticking with that.…

Asians that may feel unequal to everyone else also. The main idea of both articles express concern over the construction of “racism”. The tone of the text is rational but it changes to emotional as you read on because this is a very touchy subject to talk about. Both of the writers purposes were to explain and inform about social inequality in America. As I read the articles I did not see them shift purposes throughout the text. In the article written by Jennifer L. Eichstedt she uses cause and effect method to develop her ideas and she also uses examples. The reason she uses these methods is because they reflect the purpose of what shes writing very well. In the article written by Mr. Allen and Mrs. Chung they use chronological patterns to reflect there ideas which makes this article easy to read and follow. In the same article they use many transitional sentences because they are use chronological patterns and they work very well together and they make the article flow with ease. The writers were also smart about the choice of words they used throughout the article. They were very appropriate for the topic they were writing about. In both articles they communicate effectively on social inequality. They had different purposes and different strategies to communicate with the audience. Yes, they are on the same topic but there is many differences on how they were written.…

It doesn't stop there. As well as 28 high school sports teams have dropped "Redskins" from their name, meanwhile the name the NFL franchise that represents the nation’s capital still…
