It is a very significant event that the Chair for Sustainable Development at the Indira Gandhi National Open University is commencing today the academic session of the Post-graduate Diploma in Sustainability Science for the first time anywhere in our country. IGNOU stands as a tribute in memory of late Smt. Indira Gandhi who, in fact, was the first person to relate social dimension to conservation of environment. As the then Prime Minister and Leader of the Indian Delegation to the U.N. Conference on Human Environment in 1972, in Stockholm, Sweden, she drew the attention of the world to the fact that environmental degradation cannot be prevented so long as poverty and hunger persist. Poverty and environmental degradation form a vicious spiral, one accentuating the other. And it is now evident that economic growth that does not effectively alleviate poverty enhances social disruption. Further, environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources would, in turn, put an end to the economic growth itself. Already, population growth beyond the ‘carrying capacity’ of the planet Earth, unsustainable lifestyle and climate change have emerged as a serious threats to our civilization, and the future of life.
