Wound Cuts: A Case Study
I don’t believe a person will have the aptitude to perform nursing duties without training and education. Thus, a professional nurse would have had to acquire their knowledge from professional education grounded on evidence based practice. Moreover, the professional nurse should strive for excellence in implementing nursing care, therefore implementing evidence-based resources should be implemented in making clinical decisions. Let’s take into consideration the distinct types of wound dressings, there are diverse types available because certain types are more appropriate or inappropriate for the type of wound present. Applying evidence based resources will allow the nurse to make intelligent decisions.

    Today, I made rounds with Angela Box, the hospitals certified wound and ostomy nurse. While she also takes care of wounds and ostomies, she also makes rounds for the anthesiologists on their PCA pumps and starts PICC lines. The most interesting thing I saw was a man who had a large abdominal wound and was being treated with a wound vac. He had acquired this wound as a result of and abscess caused by the mesh that was used to repair his abdominal hernia. Initially, when she saw him in the morning, she had decided to try and dress the wound using a dressing called Oasis, which she said was made from pig intestine. She placed a 1" x 3" strip of this dressing over a small hole in the wound, applied Xeroform gauze and then taped it securely. She told the patient that this dressing should last until Monday. But about an hour later we had to go back and put the patient back on the wound vac. It was a simple procedure. She cut the sterile black foam to size, placed it on the wound and attached the tubing from the wound vac to the foam. Used a large opsite type dressing and covered the wound and the foam. Then she turned on the machine and set it to the appropriate amount of suction for this patient. I asked the patient if it was uncomfortable to use the wound vac and he stated it was not.…

    Evidence-based practice (EBP) can be seen throughout history dating back to the mid 19th century when Florence Nightingale gathered research to improve the quality of care provided to patients while analyzing hospital data (Miller, Ward & Young, 2010). EBP has been defined as “using current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient” (Ervin, NE. 2002. p. 11). Integrating EBP into nursing practice poses its own set of difficulties and barriers. To bridge the gap from literature and the evidence gathered through research into bedside nursing, there must be a clear and thought out strategy for implementation (Pipe, T., Wellik, K., Buchda, V., Hansen, C., & Martyn, D. 2005). There are many strategies to the implementation of EBP into nursing. Due to the varying levels of education and exposure, there is no right or wrong avenue for implementation. While there are barriers to the use of EBP; the outcomes from EBP include, but are not limited to, reaching the goal of better patient outcomes, decreased use of resources, and increasing revenue by decreasing cost. EBP is the culmination of the best research practices to achieve a patient directed goal while minimizing the resources needed and maximizing financial gain (Menez, J. 2007). EBP has produced many necessary changes throughout nursing and has provided safer patient outcomes. With the utilization of the best research modalities, integration and teaching of EBP, and the use of EBP in nursing, many necessary changes throughout nursing have been initiated and safer patient outcomes have been documented (Pipe, T., Wellik, K., Buchda, V., Hansen, C., & Martyn, D. 2005).
