3) A wound by true definition is a breakdown in the protective function of the skin; the loss of continuity of epithelium, with or without loss of underlying connective tissue, eg. Muscles, bone, nerves (Leaper and Harding 1998). It can be a result of many causes: pressure damage, cuts, shearing, puncture of the skin and also a result of surgery.
