Working “in the trenches” of the organization is a great way to improve leaderships skills. It helped employers realize exactly what their employees have to go through on a daily basis. They shared the identical work experience of these employees and, along the way, learn a great deal about what is good and not so good in the organization. Reading reports and management summaries is not a substitute for participating in the actual experience. The more that management can serve on the frontline. The more accurately those managers will view the business. If this program was done without any bosses going undercover it wouldn’t work. The reason the program works is because employer gets a chance to relate to the employees. It lets the employees get to know the boss lets them know their boss is human and can make mistakes just like them. It also shows the boss if anything is lacking in the company such as training because a common thing learned in programs like this is that people are often under-trained. Determine what type of leadership qualities and styles a leader would need to possess in order to agree to and be successful in this type of program.
In order to be successful in this type of program a leader would need to possess a participative leadership style. They will have to be open to hearing others suggestions and ideas on how to improve the company. Humility because the boss will have to sit and listen as people tell him what’s bad with the company. That can be hard to take sometimes and they have to be humble and be willing to take it the criticism and go back and make the appropriate changes to improve the company. Leaders with humility recognize that they are no better or worse than other employees of the company. A humble leader is not self-effacing but rather tries to elevate everyone. Leaders with humility also understand that their status does not make them better than anyone else. They have to have self- confidence because they have to leave the comforts of their own offices and go down to the production floor and actually do the jobs they hire others to do. Knowing that they might not be successful at it but still willing to try it. They have to have a sense of humor because it is vital to relieve tension and boredom, as well as to defuse hostility. Effective leaders know how to use humor to energize followers. Humor is a form of power that provides some control over the work environment. Dedication because it shows the employees that the boss is spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task at hand.
