Woods Descriptive Writing
The startling sounds of my alarm clock causes me to shoot forward from my bed. After my short lived panic I remember why I am waking up before the sun. I fumble through the darkness gathering my hunting gear before snatching up my shoes as I head towards the door. Pausing briefly in the cluttered mudroom, I pull my brown boots over my aching feet. I throw the door open and step into the misty fog. I look to my left and see the sun slowing coming over the horizon. I watch as it fades from a dark purple to a dull red and I realize that soon it will be blazing yellow. It alone will be my guide as I venture solemnly into the woods. The forest is bustling with life as I walk through the labyrinth of trees skyscraper high.

I follow the tracks until they meet a wide, boisterous stream of sparkling, clear water. I extend my cupped hands towards the water to draw out a cold drink. I gaze upwards at the illuminated sky. The straight rays of sunlight beam through the overhead canopy and I realize I must move quicker in a race against time. I rush down the trail, my gear weighing me down, and my heart beat quickening with each and every step.
Inhaling, I feel the warm air entering my lungs as I journey forward on my expedition. The immense weight of my hunting gear pulls me towards the ground. In exhaustion I stop and look around for a decent tree to put my stand in. I spot a high reaching tree a couple of yards in front of me and decide that this is where I will stopover for the remainder of my excursion. Climbing the tree into the thin, rising fog I adjust myself to the spectacular, inspiring view that always seems to take my breath away. Upon my throne, mounted in the outlying branches, I am awe stricken by the bright, golden rays of the sun highlighting the forest floor beneath me and continue to watch as the woodland creatures dance their way

In this book Bill Bryson is planning on hiking the entire 2,220 miles of the Appalachian Trial. He wanted to reacquaint himself with nature and his inner sense of self. In the beginning of the book he thought he would have to take this journey alone but he was joined by an old friend who he hadn’t talked to in a while. As he and Stephen Katz; his friend that had joined him started hiking the Appalachian Trial they were off pace and slow and they both hiked at different paces so they rarely hiked together. When I think about how slow and difficult the beginning was for them, it reminds me of how you will be as you begin your new journey, it will be completely new to you. There will be hardships there will be competition there will be new experiences that you will have to learn to deal with. There will be no one by your side telling you what turn to make next. They had a road map to tell them where to go and which way to turn but you do not, you have to make your own decisions and choose the path that you want to take without knowing the outcome or knowing where it leads.…

Upon arriving at the state park, the beautiful trees of autumn welcome you along with the variety of faces unfamiliar to you, walking around care-free. The trunks of the trees were all sorts of sizes with multitude colors; the trees were particularly brown, like milk chocolate. While some trees were bare, others possessed a thick collection of leaves, fanning out like the mane of a lion. The collection of people walking among the fallen autumn leaves creates an everlasting sound—swish, swish, swish. The faint sound of the lake brushing against the sand murmurs in the distance, inviting you to…

25 feet off the ground, was his tree stand he had installed the previous week; however, before he could go up he needed to erase his scent from the area. The wallow itself was about a quarter the size of a football field and was littered with the tracks of various animals. Taking a lap around, Will sprayed female elk scent about every five to ten feet until he was back at his tree. Using a rope hanging from the tree stand he pulled his backpack and bow up to the stand, and then climbed the giant pine himself. Once in the tree stand, he strapped himself into the seat, 25 feet is a long way to fall. With the sun cresting the mountain behind him, Will fixed his gaze on the surrounding forest, watching and listening for the arrival of his prey.…

For a few summers after my daddy went to heaven, I found myself taking long walks into the woods, a far piece behind the back of my house. When I was young I’d play there every day and over time the trails grew wide. I knew those chaotic mazes as well as my own reflection in the Miner’s River. Sometimes I’d count the steps it took to reach a fork on a specific trail, having already decided which trail to take till I arrived.…

Little lights shine their way down the rugged winding path. Foot steps trudge in front and behind staying close together. Dodging thorns and burs left and right. Ouch!—Every time. Quiet laughs fill the silence as we continue on. Our trek ascends us up a treacherous slope and through a cow pasture carpeted with mines and under a barbed wire fence and down a mile long tractor path that feels like an eternity all with our bags and rifles being persuaded down by gravity. Finally, we make it to where we part ways. Goodbyes and good lucks are exchanged while nerves set in. My father and brother confidently head to their temporary homes in the far distance while I stay idle in the darkness with only a little light as my protection. Taking a deep breath, I too, head to my makeshift home hidden among the trees except mine is a…

The gut-wrenching screech of the whistle shook my ear drums, numbed my chest, and crippled my legs. Prior to this, Pine Richland had kicked a field goal that gave them a three point lead with only seconds left. We had one play to win: a kickoff return to hopefully save not only our season, but to justify the twelve years I had devoted to this game. As the ball was hopping down the field, I stood there trying to stop my hands from frantically shaking. After what felt like an hour, I could finally feel the pigskin leather on my fingertips. I looked up to see the other team stampeding down the field straight for my head. I had to get rid of the ball. To my right, my sweat-soaked teammates had steam rising from the top of their heads and surrounding their bodies. As I threw the ball, the blurred roar of the crowd chilled my bones. I began to run and target an enemy to hit. Inches from me, a white jersey trailed only feet behind my ball-toting teammate; I was a heat-seeking missile and my target was getting warmer. Our bones crunched as our bodies collided. His mouthpiece, accompanied by saliva and mucus, flew from his mouth as his head jerked back from the blow. It was as that white jersey whimpered in pain…

It suddenly turns into a cold and rainy day in my hometown of Autumn Burrow. Damp and mellow was what my town felt like today. Autumn Burrow's the place where everyone works day and night, and urban myths and rumors of weird encounters with weird creatures. Such as vagabonds, shadows, or any other type of phenomena. I never have actually seen a ghost roaming around town, but it would be a weird experience if I ever saw one. Today, I plan to make a trip to Autumn Burrow's deep forest to find even more mysterious species, and to see if all the urban legends about the monster are true. I then start to gather all of my belongings: a satchel, my journal and pencil, and my beige trench coat. I set foot out of my lovely, wooden home, and headed on down over to Autumn Burrow's timber lands. I then start to grab my journal and pencil out of my satchel and record how I felt as of now.…

It was midsummer so it was warm outside. We are traveling through mountainous woods. Up top a ridge, we could see nothing besides the sea of evergreens that extended out off into the horizon. The red colors of the leaves reminded me of the maple trees that used to be outside of my house. I…

Each new day begins with a sunrise. It brings to earth a new light that has never been seen before. The new light starts small and gradually reaches its peak in the vast sky. It nourishes the land, provides warmth and comfort, and inspires epic tales. As the day ages the light slowly sinks behind the horizon leaving behind brilliant splashes of color as if to reflect upon its accomplishment, but the pallet of colors will quickly fade to black as the light leaves the sky to go to places unknown. Even though the day was bright and created wonder it must give way to the tranquil, mysterious, and cool night.…

As I look out across the white landscape, I try to find a place to go. Right or left, maybe straight, not knowing what to do will kill me. Straight is where I am heading, right into the trees. Once in the trees, I feel more protected. I am dodging around trees, jumping over fallen branches, soaring through the tree filled land like an eagle in the sky. I finally find a game trail and start moving along on it. The snow is packed and easier to travel on. I am running now, hoping to find any sign of humans or a camp site. SNAP! Something…

As you are tiptoeing through the woods, leaves crunching under your feet, the occasional snap of a twig when you accidently step on a branch, you try to make the least amount of noise possible. The cold feel of your gun in your hand comforts you as you walk through the pitch black woods and there is only a few foot visibility. The cool wind brings the smell of rotting leaves and the occasional frightening smell of skunk and you hope you don’t have the pleasure of meeting said skunk. As you slowly inch your way up the trunk of a tree to your tree stand you get bark in your mouth and quickly spit it out due to its taste of dirt and sand with a hint of grass. You patiently wait and…

I was now on a trail, bounded by tall trees - littered with acorns and perennially shaded from sunlight. Leaving the trees, I entered a meadow full of light. Beds of glorious yellow and vibrant purple flowers, contrasted beautifully by rows of bushes of light green. The flora surrounded a small lake so still and shiny, that it reflected objects almost perfectly. The volume of the lake was the largest I’ve seen in Autumn, due to the copious amount of snowfall the past winter.…

My mind implores me to turn around, but my heart compels me to keep moving. The rain changes from a drizzle to a downpour. A whooshing sound startles me and I look up. The sun disappears behind the rows of the leafy and elongated trees; the divine jewels of the emerald forest grow proudly out of the palms of the earth’s soil. A winding stream of pure mountain water flows through the imperial forest. The trickling sound of water flowing over the pebbles leads to a valley of snow-white cherry blossoms. The robust smell of soil, floral and dampness fills my nostrils as a warm breeze sweeps my hair. I am finally home.…
