Through history women have fought for equal rights and freedom. This tension is derived from men; society, in general; and within a woman herself. In the nineteenth century, women in literature were often portrayed as submissive to men. Literature of this period often characterized women as oppressed by society, as well as by the male influences in their lives. This era is especially interesting because it is a time in modern society when women were still treated as second-class citizens. Two interesting short stories, "Hills like White Elephants" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" focus on a woman's plight near the turn of the nineteenth century. Both authors, Hemmingway and Gilman, leave an open end to the stories and allow readers to create their own ending, in turn causing them to take part in the action while reading. These stories require more effort from the reader, but seem to turn out differently for every reader making them a bit more interesting.…

The women in the film illustrated an example of situational Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE) when she was mad at the man for eating her supposed salad. She thought the man thought it would be okay to eat her salad because he was hungry, even though she was the one who had made the mistake of sitting at the wrong table. She overestimated the man’s personality by assuming he was rude by eating “her” salad and underestimated the situation by automatically thinking the salad was hers.…

    Otsuka Oppression

Reading this the author shows how little historical and cultural differences matter. We feel as if we know these women who are telling their stories. These women were oppressed: for being women and for being Japanese. In the final sentence of "First Night," Otsuka writes, "They took us swiftly, repeatedly, all throughout the night, and in the morning when we woke we were theirs." This quote demonstrates how their identity and everything they once knew has now vanished and been taken away from them. The women began to overlook or maybe intentionally disregard where they came from and who they really are deep inside their souls. They said, "We forgot about Buddha. We forgot about God. . . . I fear my soul has died. . . . And often our husbands did not even notice we’d disappeared." This is a very powerful line the book. It is suggesting the lost of their inner-selves. Otsuka writes of the women’s children, "One by one all the old words we had taught them began to disappear from their heads. They forgot the names of the flowers in Japanese. They forgot the names of the colors". This is significant because it shows how the children’s cultural inheritance would die out along with their race and…

Themes Feminism The themes that we can see from Zhang’s films are feminism and colors. First, we would like to discuss and analyze about feminism in his films as woman would be the main key in his films all the time. For example, he chose Gong Li as his protagonist in “Raise the Red Lantern” while Zhang ZiYi in the other two films “The Road Home” and “House for Flying Daggers”. “Raise the Red Lantern” is mainly talked about a woman’s fate where she is unable to decide her own future or happiness as in marriage and force to obey her stepmother to marry with a rich old man and become his fourth wife. This film shows how she has been through all the unfortunate matters in her marriage and gone crazy in the end. “The Road Home” is mainly talked about the romance of a young lady in a village with a…
