Women often are judged outwardly based on their appearance, focusing their attention to the importance of dressing themselves well in order to balance with the societal pressure. In Deborah Tannen’s essay “Marked Women”, she asks herself that “what style we women could have adopted that would have been unmarked, like the men’s. The answer was none. There is no unmarked woman.” (270) which emphasizes how women can be marked. She implies that women have a certain duty to choose a style and can hardly dress without judgment being passed on their dressing. There are no “unmarked options”, everything we do is “marked”. Women express personas through clothing, reminding me of an observation developed in high school. It was a private Christian high school that had a strict dress code on our uniform. The uniform skirt was long enough to cover our knees, however, girls rolled their skirts up, trying to act pretty and sexy as…

In certain aspects such as clothing, cosmetics and accessories women usually have numerous avenues to express themselves. In the essay “Wears jump suit. Sensible shoes. Uses husband's last name” , author Deborah Tannen uses this occurrence through figurative language that manifests as personal and general anecdotes to show the audience that everything a woman does conveys a message, which in turn exhibit that women are always marked. One anecdote that describes a situation where women are marked for their choices occurred when Tannen took part in a conference and she noted “each of the women at the conference had to make decisions about hair, clothing, makeup and accessories, and each decision carried meaning (Tannen, 205). Through this anecdote…

The women in this ad are all white skinny females with little to no clothing on. There is also a sign above the man’s head saying “Open 24 hours.” Not only are the women stuck in a vending machine, they are also available 24/7. The writing on the side of the ad says, “Live your fantasy” as if to say, if you buy these shoes, you’ll get to pick any woman you would like. While the world doesn’t work that way, this ad appeals to men allowing them to think that it would if they bought the…

loves to wear, for mainly for aesthetics, the [ancient] flip-flop. Wearing flip-flops is becoming more common in today’s world; a women’s lacrosse team wore them in the Oval Office under the Bush Administration (Stevens 688). While Stevens finds them acceptable to wear round pools, at the beach, short trips outside, and at the gym, there are a safety problem in other places, like the airport, subway, and offices. Flip-flops have a thin sole and no support which does not give one’s foot the protection that it needs. The joints in the foot become worn because the thin sole of flip-flops do not provide enough cushion of a foot walking on a hard surface. They also do not offer protection from stepping in common items in today’s street: gum, nails, glass, and oil. The lack of support because of no back or front in the design of flip-flops also contributes to less maneuverability. Jeff Gray, a pedorthist, claims that the lack of maneuverability while wearing flip-flops adds to the probability of a fall or other serious injury (Stevens…

Many women, especially younger women, who enjoy purchasing fashionable shoes, will sacrifice comfort just for style. Increasing the awareness of this product will give women the opportunity to wear their shoes longer without discomfort. While it is said that higher price does not always guarantee quality, when it comes to women’s shoes many times the more expensive shoe brands are in fact more comfortable that those shoes on the cheaper end.
