I should be a member of Florida Leadership Academy because I am a driven person who wants to break down the barriers that others have placed. Almost two years ago, I finally received that news I have hoping to receive for years, I was going to be a United States Senate Page. To most people who hear the title of the position, most people have a preconceived notion that my parents contacted a couple of people to help me out, but that was not the case. Before I received the news, I had spent three years calling people in Washington, D.C. trying to convince them that I was the best candidate for the position. Most of the time, they would often say that I had no chance since my parents were apolitical and that the Senator does not normally select students for program. Knowing that the odds were against me, I still proceeded to email the Senator’s staff every month reminding them who I was and to not overlook me when decisions were made.
