Winners Never Cheat: Even In Difficult Times By Jon M. Huntsman
Winners Never Cheat- Even in Difficult Times
By Jon M. Huntsman

I really enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed how the author explains what it means to conduct business with integrity. The book was about how you listen to your moral compass; about how you build teams with the highest values...share success...take responsibility...earn the rewards that only come with giving back. Mr. Huntsman built his career and fortune on these principles—from his refusal of the Nixon administration's corrupt demands, to his lifelong commitment to charity, to the way he approaches his biggest deals. Huntsman's life proves honesty is more than right: it's your biggest competitive differentiator. A couple of my favorite quotes from the book are: “Life is not a game of Solitaire; people depend on one another.”
“The devil never makes you do anything. Be honest. Improper actions often appear to be easier routes, or require no courage, or are temporarily advantageous.”

He shows us that we should place ourselves around those who have the courage to say no; treat others with respect; that leadership requires risk and responsibility; and compete fiercely, but no cutting in line. (41)

In chapter 3 Play by the Rules I like how he articulated how you lead by example. We he writes:
“if these leaders and role models set bad examples, those following frequently follow suit.”(52)

Chapter 4 was very good as well as he goes into want it leadership means. One point that I am glad he expressed was that leadership is not meant to be dominion over others and that it is a position that is a composite of characteristics that earns respect.

Leadership can be defined as a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. All leaders essentially strive to complete the same tasks: provide direction, set goals, make a vision, build a positive environment, instill values, motivate, resolve conflict, and teach. James Kouzes and Barry Posner (2002) developed a survey that asked people which characteristics of leaders they look for, admire and would willingly follow. The results of the study showed that people preferred the following characteristics: honest,…

The most interesting part of the book that I reflect on is chapter 3 on the model, because it uses the paradigm shift (upside down pyramid symbolizes the servant leadership model according to, Hunter) concerning change in environment, such as doing things in a different way to change your life and meet goals. Hunter uses leadership, authority, service & sacrifice, love and will as the essential influences to align your behavior to influences with intentions and actions to lead with will power of loving what you do.…

Chapter one is based on respect, integrity, and commitment. I really enjoyed reading this chapter because it opened my eyes to a lot. For example there are three elements of respect; self respect, self esteem, and mutual respect. On page 6 it explains that self respect is paying attention to what you like about yourself. I feel that I have more self respect than self esteem. Self respect comes naturally to me because I know the rights and wrongs of the situations I put myself in. On page 13, it…

Its strength includes giving well thought out examples of both positive and negative leadership in everyday life. This allows the reader to be fully capable of comprehending the topic being discussed. An example of positive leadership is seen while it is discussing the risk of “going beyond your authority”, the author manages to incorporate David Grossman’s story about how he went beyond his authority when progress required it. As Grossman said “If you don’t occasionally exceed your formal authority, you are not pushing the envelope,” (Heifetz 23) sometimes risks are necessary in order to ensure success. The downside of having so many examples is that it can eventually become a bit overwhelming to keep track of every situation that is described because often the authors bring back previous stories later in the book. While it does do an excellent job of explaining different situations where leadership involves taking risks and the dangers that are also involved, it does slowly transcend into a rambling self-help type of book where I feel it begins straying from its original purpose. Although the book may use ideas that to most would be common sense to use in…

The second point that one can learn from this book is that if you do not take initiative and go above and beyond what is asked of you, you are less likely to succeed. The book talks about a man that walks the streets looking for work, but when he is hired he is unwilling to do what is asked of him. This results to people not hiring him because his lack of initiative. If you expect to succeed with that type of attitude in this society, then you are in the wrong. Businesses now are looking to hire or promote those that are like the lieutenant.…

One might say the term leadership demonstrates qualities like commanding, direct, bold, and courageous while others think of servant leaders who give to the community and stay in the shadows. A stereotype associated with a leader is someone who orders people around while yelling or doing other things in a bold manner. After reading this book, you will learn that that stereotype is not completely accurate because we tend to forget the leaders who instead of boldly direct people, stay in the background and let their pupils take the jump at the situations using their own personal skills. These are just two forms of leadership that are used in the book and in everyday life. This symbolism plays a large role throughout the book, enabling us to look at leaders in…
