William Dampier Research Paper
William Dampier was baptized on September 5, 1651, the son of a tenant farmer of East Coker, Somerset, England. After participating in various trading and privateering ventures on both sides of Central America he joined, in 1683, a group of buccaneers bound for the Pacific by way of Cape Horn. Three years later he set out upon his first crossing of the Pacific as one of the crew of the Cygnet.

On the voyages that he went on his job was bringing back specimens from places he visited because he was a scientist and “willing” inhabitants.After participating in various trading and privateering ventures on both sides of Central America, Dampier had joined, a group of buccaneers bound for the Pacific by way of Cape Horn in 1683.Three years later, Dampier set out upon his first crossing of the Pacific.

Along with a pirate Dampier was also very famous for being an author. He wrote setting an entire fashion for travel literature. Dampier had a very slight contribution to the Australian history. He had his own impression of the West Coast and it was unfavorable, since it seemed to him that it was long series of reefs and shoals behind which lay behind sandhills, and barren country , and without water and inhabited by the most miserable people in the world.

The great interest in the southern continent roused by his books was sustained throughout the century and the final exploration of the Pacific was carried out by his fellow countrymen. The discovery and settlement of eastern Australia may be viewed as the indirect but none the less real conclusion of all of William Dampier’s work. He died in London in

    Sir Francis Drake was an English navigator and explorer, born near Tavistock. He served an apprenticeship as a mariner, and in 1567 he was given his first command.
