There are many different types and orders of knights, they come in all different shapes and sizes. The smallest shape of a knight is of course a child. The order was created to protect the Christian pilgrims. After the crusaders came back from the First Crusade they noticed the these Christians were getting attacked by Muslim bandits. Britannica.com says “Pitying the plight of these Christians, eight or nine French knights led by Hugh de Payns vowed in late 1119 or early 1120 to devote themselves to the pilgrims’ protection” (“Templar” par. 2). Later on the king of Jerusalem, Baldwin II, gave them headquarter where the Temple of Solomon used to be, that is how they got the name Templar. Later on the order was disbanded by King Philip IV of France because of the failed crusades and were also falsely accused of blasphemy. They were created in Bruges in 1430 by the Duke of Burgundy, Philip III. According to Britannica.com “founded to defend the Roman Catholic religion, to uphold the usages of chivalry, and to increase the prestige of the dukes of Burgundy” (“The order of the Golden Fleece” par. 2).The order was also made as a sort of competition to the Order of the Garter of the English kings. They were supposed to transcend the Order of the Garter of the English kings. It originally had 24 knights allowed, but before long the number was changed 51.
Then came the end of the use for knights. Before long the knights were beaten by bowmen and foot soldiers. There was not hardly a need for them anymore because of that very reason. Britannica.com states “Knighthood lost its martial purpose and, by the 16th century, had been reduced to an honorific status that sovereigns could bestow as they pleased” (“Knights” par. 6). Thus, came the end of a chivalrous age.
