Since the fall of the Roman Empire, and the collapse of the Roman economy, when the byzantine empire took over, the coinage system pretty much disappeared, was not used anymore, so then it became a feudalist economy. So with no real money in the system the feudalism was the new economic system. The Jews were the only people that all were lending money out to the Europeans, and they charged interest for the lending. The Knights became so wealthy was because the church had allowed the Knights to charge more interest than the Jews. The Knights had also made about of money because they farmed, manufactured textiles, built roads and hospitals, and engaged in all sorts of trade.They had a size-able fleet of ships, and owned the island of Cyprus. The Knights templar had owned the island because they wanted to buy the island for their headquarters. Richard Coeur de Lion, the owner, thought it was a good deal and accepted the offer immediately. The Knights were accused of worshipping idols, chapter meetings were held in secret, we're also accused of not believing in sacraments and or mass. The pope tried to prevent it, but he had failed, which had lead to the Knight’s downfall. On Friday October 13th 1307, Pope Clement V and King Philip IV of France had ordered all of the Knights to be caught and thrown in prison. The leader of the Templar’s, Jacques de Molay, had come to France for a meeting with the pope. In 1307, the members and leaders of the Templar Knights were suddenly charged heresy and so they were arrested. Many at France, mainly their leaders, were burned at the stake. Some were burned while others were sent to prison for the rest of their lives. King Philip’s soldiers imprisoned all the Knights in France. When the Knights were arrested, they were severely tortured. They had admitted that they had done the crimes under torture, until they admitted the crimes, all of their land had been lost and all of their possessions (gold, equipment, etc). The charges against the Knights Templar were that they had to deny Christ. They also had to spit on the cross and other things like that. The Knights Templar were charged with heresy because they had a lot of money, land, and privileges. King Philip IV had taken down the order because he was a poor King, and a very bad military leader,
