What are the advantages and disadvantages of text messaging?
Texting is one of many ways of communication between ourselves which makes our lives easier. Text messaging is used by all and especially by youth. They mostly are using their own style to write a message. There are some benefits of using text messaging for cell phone users. However, negative impacts on children from using texts also exist. This essay will explain all disadvantages and advantages of text messaging on its users in their communities.
There are several disadvantages of text messaging that affect peoples’ language in the all communities around the world. The first disadvantage of text messaging is that school performance can be negatively affected students’ performance in school. For instance, students are facing difficulties about grammatical mistakes at school which means the language they are using for texting is too weak for their schools (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program 2009). Also, spelling is problem that affects student’s school work. This can be mirrored in their exam papers and this happens with students because they use abbreviation to the words (‘SMS spells end of gd grammar?’ 2008). A second disadvantage of text messaging is the lack of writing skills in school. For instance, most of the teachers at school concerned about students’ performance because of texting and they said that most of students do not know about the differences between the formal languages and informal (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program 2009). Moreover, students now are using a lot of abbreviations rather than full words and this makes them to use short sentences which put themselves in terrible situations (‘SMS spells end of gd grammar?’ 2008). A third disadvantage of texting is that new language is getting people misunderstanding. For example, most of this new language is absorbed into spoken language which might be spoken in front of children and make them confused about what is correct and incorrect about the actual language (‘SMS spells end of gd grammar?’ 2008). To sum up, all students are facing a lot of difficulties to understand the differences of the real language and they cannot do very well in the school works.
There are a few advantages from using SMS messaging on users in this life. The first advantage of text messaging is a huge creativity of new language especially between teenagers. For example, texting bring up the creativity of new language between youths which can be used like their own language instead of the main language with its features (‘SMS spells end of gd grammar?’ 2008). Also, most 0teenagers are basically developing their own language and at the same time they have not seen any effects on their school performance (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program 2009). Another advantage of text messaging is a great deal of convenience for all text users. For instance, text messaging language is more useable by all because it is sort of a quicker way to text each other instead of writing normal language (‘SMS spells end of gd grammar?’ 2008). Furthermore, all of youths prefer the language that they are using to message each other because the language allows them to use abbreviations and the symbols for texting, this language does not have rules for writing (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program 2009). The third advantage of text messaging is that is cost effective for users. For example, messaging uses reformed phone language because it is fashionable shorthand and cheaper as well which makes youths use it a lot (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program 2009). In brief, youths and even elders are using texting and they find the new language is cheap, suitable, and easier than the formal to use between them.
In conclusion, texting has positive and negative impacts on our lives. There are drawbacks from texting that affect students’ performances especially the grammar and spelling. Also, students writing skills are affected badly because of this modified new language. However, there are also benefits of using this modern language is that the creativity of this new language makes people to create new phrases of this language for users. Furthermore, it is cheaper than phone calls which can be encouraged youths to use it. So, families should do more educational activities for their children to avoid them from using this modern text language in schoolwork.
