Why Should You Suffer Like Somebody Did 100 Years Ago.
There were a lot of interesting viewpoints throughout this video. I learned a lot of new information after watching this movie that makes me think differently about childbirth. For example, I never really thought it could be an option to have a cesarean section, I always just thought that it was only used when necessary. There are some viewpoints mentioned that I somewhat agreed with and then there were also viewpoints that I strongly disagreed with.
Right at the beginning of the video, one of the ladies whom Anna was sitting with was talking to Anna about her childbirth. Throughout their conversation, she mentioned some very interesting points. I agree with the lady when she said that she was completely for drugs. “Why should you suffer like somebody did 100 years ago.” she said. If there are safe medical ways that can help reduce the pain of delivery, why would we not use them? I think everyone should be thankful for all of the medical discoveries made and utilize these discoveries so that they

A free birth is having a birth that is at home and alone with no doctor present. I absolutely do not agree with Jo’s decision of choosing to have her baby without a doctor present. Doctors go to school for many, many years and get paid a lot of money to do things like help a woman birth a child. I think it is absolutely necessary that a doctor is there for a woman giving birth for the safety of both the mother and the newborn baby. We are lucky in our time period to have these wonderful doctors to help us. People years ago did not have doctors and so now that we have them, I think we should definitely be thankful for them and utilize them. Yes, I agree with her when saying that we all think we “need” doctors. No, we do not necessarily need doctors. We are capable of birthing a child on our own, but I think it is so much safer to have somebody there that knows the best and safest way

The first video that was watched was Family & Social Changes. This video was about how the family live has changed over the years. Families were looked at as being a mother and father and children. The father was the one that would work while mother stayed home and did the household chores. The kids were well behaved and helped as they were asked to. If you were a woman who had a child without being married you were looked at as living in sin just as if you were a man and woman living together but not being married. There were not many divorces either. Now days, you see more and more people living together but not married. Divorce is something that unfortunately is a common thing for people to do. Women are not so eager to have children instead they are working and supporting themselves. Women are also working more and being the sole or contributing bread winner of the family.…

“The Business of Being Born” is a documentary directed by Abby Epstein. In this documentary Abby Epstein shows the viewers an inside look of the American Health care systems way of childbirth. The film compares all the different types of childbirths: midwives, natural births, Cesarean, and epidurals. The film uses many statistics to show viewers the many challengers doctors face in the hospital that can put the baby in harm. This documentary made me realize that hospital births are McDonaldization.…

My opinion on this article is that it is a well written article and gives a lot of details on what the situation is. I chose this article because I was mainly focusing on Medicine, Disease, and Health because I really like knowing about what kinds of different diseases there are and what just goes on in the human body. I don’t know if I agree with the article or disagree with the article because of how it turned out to be at the end with the baby girl. I think the article kind of turned out to be a…

This film was very interesting and helpful because in my earth science class I am giving a group presentation of Hydro-fracking, and although I discovered in my research how harmful it can be, seeing personal accounts of it gave me a better feel on the subject. I think we need to come up with a better way to get natural gas out rock because injecting chemical fluid into the ground is too risky pertaining to our water supply. After all, we need water to survive. I agree that it is a problem that we are depending on what one legislature calls "foreign oil and terrorism," but I would rather keep depending on these resources then polluting our water supply and turning American land into nasty dumps. From this film and the group project I participated in for class, I have learned that our water can be easily contaminated. Fracking needs to be a careful process that should be done nowhere near major water sources are located.…

Increasingly women are moving away from the traditional, unnatural child birthing option of hospital births, and embracing other options. This lead me to wonder what types of women are rejecting their parents ways of welcoming children into the world, and exploring alternative options that better suit their family. Homebirths, water births, doulas, and midwives are just a few of the options aside from a drug enduced hospital birth. Similarities and differences between these two groups of women have been identified, but overall, women just want their children to come into a safe, happy environment.…

It’s what the mother has wanted and what she had planned. Not counting it was more than likely planned with the mothers midwife if she had one. The mother should be able to do what makes her comfortable and what is going to make her happier in the birthing process. When you want to think about it really it is about the mother because she is the one that is giving birth to the child not the doctors or the nurses or anyone else in the hospital. Everyone in the room on Friday seem to agree that the women should have been able to have and use her birth plan. There were a lot of women there that were midwifes and/or had children themselves that agreed that the women that have birth plans should be able to use them if they go to the hospital to have their…

My video is pro-choice and my stance is on pro-choice abortion. I believe everyone should make their own decision whether to abort or not. We do not have to agree someone’s position but we do not have to respect their choices, and understand that they know what is best for themselves. It is their choice and they should be able to make it by themselves. It is their body and no one know their body than themselves and the decision should be left to the person to make about their body based on deontological theory. I choose deontological theory for my stance because I believe it is for the greater good for both the fetus and the mother if the mother knows that she will be able to girth the fetus the best live. Sometimes thing happen that we cannot…

“Fatumata, where are you, I took a deep breath and crossed the threshold, the tin door wobbling as I shut it behind me. I felt as if I was drowning in the smell of fresh, body fluids, and leftover food”(Holloway, 7). In her book Kris Holloway talks about in Malia, despite the oppressive heat, women found a rare taste of money of privacy in an otherwise common world. In fact, the birthing house was one of the few hallowed grounds where men were not allowed to tread. People do not realize women in America have the choice of where they wish to experience the birth of their child. They can choose to use a hospital, a birthing center, or a home birth. The women in Mali and in developing countries do not get those choices. They either chose the birthing house with a midwife or they have it a home alone. Choices are something we are blessed with and these women that choice could end up being life or death. A choice that most of the women cannot to…

There’s this idea since hospitals are a business that once they “facilitate” an intervention has been started and it becomes a domino effect after that. When these interventions have started, the questions: “what’s best for the baby?” “Is the baby going to benefit from this or not?” need to be well thought out. According to Overview of Maternity, “medical evidence shows that the routine use of unnecessary interventions put mothers and babies at risk.” In the film Marsden Wagner M.D., stated that there is no history of worthy obstetrical practices and careful studies of the long-term effects of the interventions.…

I really enjoyed this documentary because it was like no other I have ever watched. This documentary highlights the struggles of soldiers returning to civil society after going to war. We were able to see the hardships of a soldier trying to return to his old life even though he was permanently scarred, both physically and mentally. As we discussed in class, we are able to see that not only are the soldiers affected by the war, but also their family and those closes to them. In the film, the wife is the one who is directly affected by her husband going off to war. I admire her strength as she committed herself to the physical well-being of her husband, but that was taking a toll on her as well. She seemed numb to her husband’s mistreatment and I can only imagine how emotionally overwhelmed she felt. I feel that the drugs the soldier had to take due to his injury added to his mental instability. From personal experience, I do know the effects of strong pain medication. They themselves have their own side effects. Now add years of trauma and pain from the battlefield. This is why the soldier’s behavior did not surprise me. Any person would react in the same way. It is sad to know that many of these young men who have returned from the war are not being helped in the ways that they should be and I wish there were more programs focused on helping our country’s…

Black Genocide was a very intriguing and interesting piece of material that filled my knowledge with much more than I had intended it doing. Before watching this video, I knew a little about abortion but not about the black genocide part. You see, I knew that abortion was a way for the government to obtain legal rights to abort children who weren’t able to be cared for but I didn’t know the government was using abortion as a way to limit the black population. I also knew that African Americans were having a lot of abortions and there were, and still is a lot of abortion facilities but never put together the idea of how they were getting access to this information, furthermore, the connection between eugenics and genocide.…

Having an abortion is a HUGE decision. Having to have one is a very traumatic procedure. The woman having the abortion knows this. Having to go to meetings and check-ups to absolutely ensure the fact that she wants to go through with one is unconscionable interference. This is not fair to the woman. She knows what she is facing up against, she does not need to feel like a bad person for having one, which is the goal of these meetings. These meeting really are pointless. Before having these meeting she must make sure that the baby doesn’t have a heartbeat because if one is found she will not be able to follow through with the abortion. If a woman does not want to go through these troubles she has the choice of being on birth control and attending a high quality sex education class.…
